In which summer is survived, allergies are reacquired and I play/watch here and there.

Hello, everyone! I hope everyone enjoyed Labor Day weekend.

As I'm typing this, I'm fighting off allergies that seem to have come in with the cold front that arrived in NW Arkansas overnight. I took some Zyrtec almost an hour ago so it may be a while before it kicks in. Just as long as it kicks in. After getting a good night's sleep I don't really want to have another nap that's induced by waiting for allergies to pass. Not right now, at least.

I spent this past weekend in Batesville (AR) visiting my parents for the holiday/3-days-off weekend. It was great to see most of them (older brother was a no-show; tied with up plans back at his house) and relax for a few days. I tend to bring entertainment home in the form of blu-rays/dvds that I think my mother and sister would enjoy. However, between the U.S. Open (which my sister is crazy about) and college football (which I alone don't care about), those movie watching moments were slim. Slimmer than they have in the past.

We did manage to watch King Arthur: Legend of the Sword together. It was a flop earlier this summer but I liked it. It had an unconventional take on the Arthurian legend in both its script and visual presentation (both full of director Guy Ritchie's trademarks and flourishes). Upon reaching the end, my mother said, "That was interesting" which is code for "didn't care for it." My sister was mum about it so I'll just assume that she cared as much as Mom.

On Monday night, I tried out an overlooked 70's take on the Robin Hood legend, Robin and Marian. It was released in 1976, directed by Richard Lester and starring Sean Connery as Robin, Audrey Hepburn as Maid Marian and Robert Shaw as the Sherrif of Nottingham. It was photographed beautifully. It had a dependably lush romantic score by John Barry, the period detail was good (although most of the action is confined to Sherwood Forest; not a lot of castles in this one; also, shooting was done in Spain instead of England)....but man, I was unprepared for the sharp left turn towards tragedy at the end. One one level, I get it. All the main characters are aging, with their glory days behind them and the events in the film make up one last hurrah. But good lord, I felt like I was watching the very end of the Wild Bunch (not the bloody shootout, but the aftermath) and it felt jarring compared to what the film was offering before. I'm trying to keep this spoiler free in case any reader wants to watch it someday.

As far as new film releases go, the last time I was in the cineplex was to see Terminator 2 in 3D. I'm not gaga over the format but I love the film and have always wanted to see it on the big screen (I was too young to see it in 1991 when it was first released theatrically). I felt the 3D was pretty good; like Avatar, it goes for depth and more subtle effects from scene to scene (the already shocking Judgement Day dream that Sarah has is still a knockout). If you haven't seen it and may still have a chance, it's worth going to again. My understanding is that it basically flopped in its opening weekend (probably due to limited showings in selected AMC theaters) so I'm not sure it'll be around for much longer.

Gaming wise, there wasn't much for this past weekend. For the weekend before, I gave both my PS4 and PS3 some attention. I'm slowly but surely continuing through Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (enjoyable) and Stardew Valley (Farm is still up and running and I'm married!). For the PS3, I had some huge desire to play the Ninja Gaiden Sigma games so I satisfied my bloodlust that way.

This past week was dominated by my handhelds and mostly purchases: I snagged a $25 used copy of Chrono Trigger for the DS and bought the Mega Man Anniversary Collection from the Nintendo e-shop for $7. On PSN this weekend, there was a PAX sale, so I bought a handful of games: Nex Machina for the PS4 and for the Vita: Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, Final Fantasy VI, Ys Book 1 and 2 (remaster) and Ys: Memories of Celceta.

I need to stop buying games.

And since I've built up my gaming backlog, I have no interest in Destiny 2, even though I'm sure it'll get a lot of attention. I'm still burnt out by the first game so I'll pass. I still need to play Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

That's it for now. I may need to take a nap the more that I think of it.

That's a nice set of purchases though. Can't go wrong with those.

Those are good purchases. I have most of them already. My next purchase will be Ys VIII.

ha ha "that was interesting."

I don't think I've ever seen Robin and Marian. Sounds interesting.

I love those Ninja Gaiden games. I play them over and over and I own every iteration. I wish they could make a sequel that lives up to the first.

I still need to play every Uncharted, myself ... I have the Drake Trilogy.

I need to stop buying games as well. I have all these AAA titles I'm not in the mood for and just end up playing Sonic Mania all the time.

I think T2 flopped because no one knows that's happening ... first I've heard of it.
