In which I blog again, game again and search for another job again.

So, allow me to get this uncomfortable news out of the way. I recently lost the job I had (working as a machine operator for a factory that makes specialized copper fittings for plumbing) due to one bit of tardiness that couldn't be excused by upper management. I was under a 90 probationary period where, among other things, if I was late for any time that couldn't be excused, I would be fired. I was late one day for 5 minutes due to a traffic jam near the workplace and because I called the company hotline (to notify them about the problem) too close to shift time, the tardiness wasn't excused. So the best job I've ever had (definitely in terms of pay and benefits) ended just like that. I feel so stupid. I know that it won't be long before I get another job but I worry that it won't be as good as this one in terms of pay. So I'm job hunting again. I'm not worried about my prospects but that I had to start all over again so soon felt like a gut punch. It hurts to tell anyone about it even though I'm sure most if not all of you have been in this situation.

  1. But, fuck the pain. It'll pass so lets move on to a happier note and that is that I'm gaming more often these days. Recent acquisitons:

1) my Xbox 360 finally died so I took an opportunity to finally upgrade to an Xbox One. I like the system so far and I love that most of my digital purchases from the older system have carried over. So far I'm playing Gears of War UE, Gears of War 4, Stardew Valley (of course I am) and I have Witcher 3 Complete Edition, Titanfall 2, The Witness, Skyrim Remastered (I LOVE MODS) and some 360 games: Burnout Paradise, Left for Dead 2 and others. If you want to play with me or friend me, my handle is MongoSantaMaria.

2) my PS4 had to be replaced due to disc drive issues and I got a Slim model. I had saved my games to an external hard drive and all the saves are in the cloud so I was able to resume where I left off. Recent games: Far Cry 5, Assassin's Creed Origins. Gamefly sent me Wolfenstein II. Oh, and there are of course the huge backlog for that system alone.

3) Snagged a deal for a used SNES Mini console ($60) and it's so cool to play those games again. I haven't played almost half of the games before and I missed the window to get some of them through the Wii Virtual Console before it shut down last month (Super Castlevania IV, Contra III, Donkey Kong Country) so its valuable in more ways than one.

4) Speaking of Wii, I got a sealed copy of the limited edition of Super Mario All-Stars for $20 from a local gaming store. I set up the Wii in the back room of my house with the older, non-HD tv so I'm just glad that I now have a copy of this.

I saw Isle of Dogs last weekend and being a Wes Anderson fan, I loved it. Of course, I'll be seeing the Avengers movie this weekend (in IMAX, yay!) but I'm also catching up on films from last year.

That's all for now. I hope everyone is doing well. Later!

I'm sorry about your job. I have been in situations like that. It's rough when your livelyhood just disappears in a snap. I hope you find a new job soon.

Isle of Dogs hasn't come to my theater yet and I don't think it will. Boo!  But I will see Avengers!!!!

Thanks. I have no worries about finding a job. Just with finding a job that pays as well as the last one did.

I'm so paranoid about being late to my job I leave several hours early and read in the local Barnes & Noble nearby until I start. It's not even a great job. I'm just stupid I guess, but I guess some jobs can be really strict like yours. Too bad they wouldn't excuse you. Seems overly harsh to me.

I saw Isle of Dogs too in the theater. Had to because after Grand Budapest Hotel and some other Wes Anderson films I saw just previous to it, I am now a huge fan and wouldn't miss it for the world.

I'm not seeing Avengers though. Too many characters. I like Dr. Strange but what's he going to do in this movie with so many characters, like have two lines and out? I'll see Deadpool 2 for sure though. Love the humor in that one.

From the few reviews I've read of Avengers, the writers/directors pulled off the same trick they did with CA: Civil War in terms of balancing time and subplots for the ensemble. What intrigues me is the idea that the villain is the protagonist so he gets more screen time than you'd expect (I mean, unless I'm misinterpreting remarks made by the directors on that issue). It sounds like a good way around the pitfall of an underdeveloped villain.

Agree with Deadpool 2. That last trailer sold me more than anything else.

Villain is the protag. Interesting. Somehow it seems to fit the times.

I'm trying to avoid Deadpool trailers. I like to know as little about it as possible. I like to be surprised.

I'm in a weird limbo where I've been told my university had a faculty hiring freeze and I'm not sure if I'll be hired back or some other guy they're trying to get (I have a full-time adjunct position, so they're wanting a doctorate-holder who take my place) will still want to take the position. So I kind of know how you feel, although I wish I had a definite answer; I've usually signed something by March when the search committee is this far behind.

I don't think I'll ever actually finish my PS4 backlog, honestly. I don't think I've ever had near the library I do on that thing. Sales and PS+ account for a lot of it.

Sweet deal on the SNES Mini! Wouldn't it be nice if I could go to a Wal Mart and just buy one? Like, just give Nintendo money? Ah, it's too bad they won't do that.

I actually saw Isle of Dogs the other day with my best friend and his girlfriend. She was taken aback by how dark it was at first, but ended up loving it. I enjoyed the dark humor, so I was good to go throughout.

I only saw one preview of Isle of Dogs.  I'd like to see it, but I don't know any movie theater around who is showing it.  I may have to wait until it comes to video.

We went to Lufkin to see it, so I'd imagine the Magnolia or Angelika have it in Dallas if it's still playing.

I'm sorry about the job. I'm sure you'll be fine, but that probably isn't much comfort right now.

I got my SNES Mini from Toys R Us in Phoenix the week before they announced they were closing down. I never saw the SNES Mini anywhere else, but every Toys R Us in the area had three or four in stock.
