I spit on your grave: My advice? Stay away. Your opinion may vary.

So, I tried to watch “I spit on your grave”. Some horror fans might consider it a “cult classic” from the 70’s and it starts out okay enough. Jennifer is a writer and she leaves the city to pretty much relax amongst the splendors of nature. The actress who plays Jennifer actually does a great job. She’s likable, impressionable, and very believable.

Problems set in when the male characters are introduced. Most of them are a bunch of  horny hicks and one of them is an awkward religious nerd who cites New-york as being “an evil city”. (He says this with a New-Jersey accent by the way. Derp!) Not only is the narration bad but all these guys ham it up to the point they are more caricatures than characters.

Apparently these bored guys with nothing to do decide it’s fun to harass random girls that come in to visit their small podunk town. They start this off by driving their dumb-ass boat in circles while hooting and hollering at Jennifer who is trying to relax in her hammock next to the river. Later these same idiots decide it’s a good idea to hijack Jennifer and her boat then drag it to a secluded area with high grass. This is where her struggle and nightmare begins in earnest.

Again, the problem is the male perpetrators don’t convince me they are actual people. They’re evil and stupid to the point that they must have grown up in a vacuum devoid of morality and logical reasoning. (Even though their town has a friggin church in it for crying out loud! While I‘m not overly religious myself I do at least appreciate how Christianity can teach people good ethics and amiable behavior.)

Maybe as an adult I simply have forgotten how dumb and cruel young guys can be when left to their own devices. So what’s my beef? Why are “country-folk” always painted this way in horror movies? As someone who grew up in a small town I can testify the worst you might get from the locals is a few curious or suspicious glances. (Hell, you get that same reaction when visiting certain neighborhoods in the city!) Beyond their initial anxiety, people from my home town would be nice and courteous. Sure, we had our bullies, racists, and drunkards but I never heard of an incident where a random female from the big city was dragged off and raped repeatedly just because the “good ol boys” thought it would be a fun side diversion!

This all leaves me with a perplexing conundrum. In my rpg I did have a scenario where one of my female characters went through sexual abuse. I honestly cannot say if the “male villains” I created who did this to her were any deeper or better thought out than the ones in this movie. “Rape” is a difficult issue to address in fiction because let’s be honest, we all want to skew things in favor of the victim and root for the under-dog. When I created the bad guys for my rpg I wanted you to hate them. I really REALLY wanted you to hate them. In retrospect, that seems like a bit of a cop-out. Like it or not, criminals are people too. We may despise what they do but it doesn’t mean they’re incapable of caring for others and expressing generosity in their own twisted fashion. The best villains usually have a couple sympathetic qualities to them and perhaps the pit-fall of this movie (and my rpg) is that overall the villains come off as having the depth of cardboard.

Yeah, sometimes a spade is just a spade. Sometimes a person really is a shallow, sadistic, and mean-spirited narcissist with no hidden layers underneath. I suppose I shouldn’t rule that out. Yet when you combine that truth with bad acting it’s difficult to ignore as a collective whole.

The best part of the movie is Jennifer’s revenge. Or so I’ve been told. I couldn’t even watch the movie beyond the point Jennifer was being held down and the guys were egging on the nerd to “lose his virginity”. Perhaps I simply don’t want to acknowledge people can be this vile or it made me reflect back on all the times in my youth when this sort of thing came up. I did have a childhood friend who supposedly had incestual sex with her brother and father. My first introduction to pornography was a snuff film where a woman was snorting cocaine while guys took turns having sex with her. When she no longer could perform they beat her with baseball bats and that scene was followed by a funeral procession. I don’t think it was “real” but  the fact someone out there could potentially get off to even a simulated version of this scenario left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I really wish my first porno would have been “Debby does Dallas” or “Tracy Lords in Spanky-vania” but I cannot travel back in time, the damage has already been done.

So is this a good horror movie? The actress who played Jennifer did an outstanding performance. The male actors? Eh, not so much. This is the typical “Person goes to a small country town and gets harassed by kooky rednecks” set up. I found it to be exploitative and sickening but your mileage may vary. Honestly, Deliverance probably did all this better!

I like the 70s one, the remake sucked ass.

Yeah, I thought the woman who played as Jennifer in the original did a great job! I don't know much about the remakes but this will be as far as I go,Lar. lol.

Shock cinema, nothing more.  The subject of sexual assault and fear of the back-woods has been handled with more sophistication elsewhere.  This film is a freakshow, and not a particularly well done one. It has nothing of any value to say, it's not educational, and it doesn't provide aesthetic pleasure or wonder.

I actually fell into the trap of "older is better",Chris. Aka, thinking that visiting a movie from the 70's would somehow be more artistic or more deep. I already knew what the movie was about but I wanted to see how well it did it.

For what it's worth, the actress playing as Jennifer gave a great performance. Everything else? Eh, nothing that I consider original or ground shaking. You're right. The themes here have been done better in other movies. (At least in my personal opinion and that opinion doesn't carry much weight on account I'm no Roger Ebert. lol.)

Speaking of Roger Ebert, he hated this film.

I'm staying away from this one. I don't like rape in film, even when its portrayed responsibly.

Heh,wasn't surprised Ebert had issues with the film. I guess we agree on something. But even for the people who like it, I will not judge! Oh,the skeletons I have in my own closet...

I just wanted to chime in to let you know that I do read your blogs.  I may not post a comment if I don't have anything intelligent to say, though.  Like your last blog.  I read it, but the only thing that came to my mind was that I liked the picture you posted of Ayane. :)

Last Thursday I did see the original Night of the Living Dead at a Rifftrax showing.  Rifftrax is done by some of the folks who did MST3K.  While their comments were funny and the movie was well-deserved of riffing, I have to say that after seeing it, I think it must've been a groundbreaking horror film in the 60's.

NOTLD was a ground breaking film for the 60's,Cary! The 80's remake is pretty good too and I think Resident Evil might have borrowed just a little bit from it.

I saw Night of the Living Dead recently. I was a little bit surprised to see Rifftrax doing their thing with it. I guess some of it does come off a little bit silly, but for the most part, I thought it was pretty good. I liked the "downer" ending too. You don't see that too often.

BrokenH

10/27/2013 at 02:37 PM

Yeah, "downer endings" in the 60's were not as common. I personally think the original NOTD is still a good film. Haters can hate if they want though! Tongue Out

A black leading man too. Not common in the sixites.

BrokenH

Exactly. The movie really pushed the envelop and expanded boundaries. I don't think it deserves to be mocked but that's just my personal opinion.

KnightDriver

That's what I thought, but I guess the guys at Riftrax thought otherwise.

For many folks it's easier to tear something down than build it from the ground up. Usually I find those kind of people are insecure about themselves or just mad at the world for no good reason. lol.

I guess in their own way they're merely doing a humorous homage to a good film but I don't understand what's impressive about mocking a movie out loud through its' duration then trying to sell that as something special to the consumer. (Hopefully I'm not coming off as an asshole for people who enjoy Mystery Science Theatre & Rifftrax. Different strokes for different folks?)

KnightDriver

I enjoy those guys too only lately they've chosen some more mainstream films to mock. I thought Starship Troopers was also an unusual film for them to do. That film is bad, but purposely so. It's mocking gung-ho, blindly patriotic attitudes, and the propaganda of selling a war.

BrokenH

Satirizing a satire does seem to miss the point. It's as you say, Starship troopers is meant to be cheesy and a mockery of blinded zealous patriotism.

In MST3K they used some really out there stuff, which I though was great. I loved that.

I might have to check out more of MST3K's older stuff. Who knows? I may dig it! I know they had a lot of weird and intriguing characters for the show.

I loved the characters. Some of the antics before and after the movie were funnier than the wisecracks during the movie.

I would see this movie when I was looking for something to watch on Netflix.  One day, I'll watch it.

That's pretty much how I reached my decision. It's been on netflix awhile,James!

This movie is just like Human Centipede.  I mean that in the sense that it is a film that I have absolutely no desire to ever watch it.

I feel ya. Don't get me wrong. There are some redeeming aspects to this film (beautiful shooting locales and decent acting from the female lead) but beyond that nothing is what you haven't seen before. I do like how the victim at least gets some closure though.

I never saw the original, but I did catch the remake. I enjoyed the remake, especially the revenge part. So coldly calculated..

BrokenH

I find myself torn because this movie sort of slams both genders,Chris. What I mean is that it somewhat exploits the main female character while also encouraging violence against men. (While working under the assumption men are a snap decision away from raping someone) I feel as if movies like this are why I get suspicious or fearful glances from certain females when I'm just picking up groceries or going to the corner store to get some snacks. "Rape hysteria" isn't a good impulse to feed within society. Yeah, we need to let people know it happens but we have to be careful how we do it. Otherwise it just creates stereotypes, paranoia, and discrimination.

This is by and large my issue with "cult classics". Give something enough time passed and everyone thinks it's important just because it was extreme, although it holds no other creative merit or sense of craft. As I've said many times before, a little objectivity in the creative process goes a long way. All the shock-porn horror in the world just stands to show how good John Carpenter's Halloween, Nosferatu, and to echo some others on here, Night of The Living Dead is.

Night of The Living Dead is far and away one of my favorite horror movies (and movies in general). It works on so many levels, follows a logical train of thought, and shows that in the end (SPOILER ALERT), the asshole in the cellar was kind of right the whole time.

BrokenH

10/30/2013 at 05:39 PM

You hit the nail on its' head. I went into this movie because it supposedly was a "cult classic" but in actuality it did not introduce anything new or push any envelops. Just another excuse to mix violence, sex, and killing into a single bloody cocktail.

Don't misunderstand me. Some people like this kind of stuff and it doesn't make them "bad" or "evil". We are not always defined by what we play or what we watch. This simply is not my guilty pleasure of choice.

By contrast I think "Night Of The Living Dead" deserves its' status as a cult classic. Yes,zombies are common but the way that movie set up its' characters and the way it ended was revolutionary for that time period.

Yeah... that's happened to me twice. Been watching some average porn, then Boom, out of fucking nowhere the guy just up and kills her. I came anyway, because it would be a wasted 10 minutes otherwise, but I was scarred nonetheless! Anyway, those videos generally aren't real.

I have no interest in watching I spit on your grave. it doesn't appeal to me at all. you're right about characters though. Sure, in real life there are shallow cunts out there, but this is fiction, it doesn't need to portray the boring bits of life.

BrokenH

10/30/2013 at 05:32 PM

It's better to avoid Blake so you're doing yourself a favor. Some of my friends here probably like it because the victim gets her well deserved revenge but I just didn't have it in me to watch Jennifer get raped repeatedly. (Yeah,it doesn't happen just once because hey, once just isn't traumatic enough!) Beyond that it doesn't do anything other films in this genre haven't.

As for "snuff porn" I understand most of it is fake but try telling that to me as a naive teen. lol. I really thought it was legit and that fucked with my mind for quite awhile.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Even knowing it's fake can mess you up, especially the lengths some of them go to.

On a side note, google "Smurf Porn." I guarantee you will laugh until you cry. The guy is painted blue, and while the chick is blowing him, the paint starts coming off... late on in the vid a group of smurfs come to circle jerk on her and they whistle the theme song... I fucking died when I saw it lol.

BrokenH

11/03/2013 at 01:37 PM

How could those porn stars keep straight faces while painted like Smurfs whilst whistling the theme song? I'd be cracking up too much to get hard. lol. Welp, I guess that's where viagra comes in. It'll make you stand erect even if your thoughts are 100% unrelated to "getting it on".
