So I stumbled across this op/ed yesterday, defending notorious fanservice vehicle Senran Kagura in light of the criticism over it's sea of giant teen boobs, and the clothes-ripping, panty-flashing nonsense it's slathered with. The central argument made in it's defense--with only a rep from the company localizing the game to back it up--is that there's a genuinely good game with well fleshed out characters under all the jimmy rustling shenanegins. The rep even goes on to accuse the CRITICS of objectifying the characters by not giving the game a chance.

LOL wow, okay.

So it's not their fault the game is seen the digital equivalent of a titty bar? Well, golly gee, I must've TOTALLY misinterpreted the promos and such, then, then. Looking at it again, it's obviously a celebration of girls that doesn't hide behind base tittilation to push it's wares. No siree bob, I can't imagine why anyone would jump to such a conclusion when they've been marketing the franchise on it's merits first.

Seriously, though...how does that argument HELP the game's case? If the game really has a great story with interesting characters, why is it coupled with such nonsensical fanservice then? Why couldn't they have given the girls more reasonable figures, tamped down the boob grabbing and wet t-shirt gags, and kept their clothes on during combat? People defending the game on those terms are essentially saying that MarvelousAQL was too cowardly to push an all-girls game without all that shit.

Look. If you're going to be relying on ass and titties to push your product, then just do it. But you have to own that shit and the inevitable criticism that comes with it. Don't make up half baked excuses trying to make it sound different--because if it WASN'T a key selling point for the game it wouldn't be in there. End of story.

What they're doing here is the same as a stripper pulling her titties out during her routine and then getting mad at the customers for staring at them.

I would like to get this game if it had a physical release or if the eshop price was cheaper.

Just so you know, Angelo did a review of the game.

Sorry but I kinda disagree with you (keep in mind I haven't played the game). Is there any problem with a product of media that has fanservice but also story? I don't know, I thought this blog came off as that. Besides, I did hear that the story was decent.

I didn't even know about this game or anime so I'm kinda in the dark of this game's content, theme and bulid.

Though I do understand fanservice it can at times get overbearing. I can hardly tolerate my Onechanbara game I have for the Wii. I'm usually not one for seeing lots of anything like that in my media to a degree.

As for the situation at hand about the sales promos I'll need to look more into this to see how exactly this comes to play.
