What?! I thought you said Crown of Kings?!

More commonly known as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, but then retitled Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain to differentiate it from AD&D: Treasure of Tarmin, its sequel, it was changed yet again to Crown of Kings for this DS port. Got all that?

                      adndmap

Cloudy Mountain is so far from my simple cabin. . .

This game has two main screens, the world map and randomly generated dungeon. You move into a mountain area of the world map and then you have to traverse a dungeon map to get through it. Along the way you collect items like a boat to cross water, an axe to get through forest, keys to open gates, and arrows to fight off enemies. Different enemies take different numbers of arrows to defeat and sometimes it’s wise to avoid an enemy to conserve ammo. In each dungeon you’re looking for items to pick up but also the ladder to take you out of the dungeon to the next area of the world map. Ultimately you have to head to Cloudy Mountain on the right side of the world map where the pieces of the Crown of Kings lie each defended by a dragon. Collect the two pieces of the crown and you win the game.

                                                     Run dammit! Run!

You use the touch pad to fire arrows and the d-pad to move. You take damage by being touched by an enemy. Get touched three times and you’re dead. The dungeon reveals itself as you go, so listening to the sound of enemies is important, or you’ll just run right into them.

This game is very simple, but that’s why it’s good.

All I know about D&D is that apparently my friend went to real games be around her now-fiancee more, and the leader guy was an asshole to her cause she was an elf.

Also, Vin Diesel wrote the foreword to one of the books.

Thus ends my D&D knowledge.

I heard Vin Diesel is really into that stuff.

This game has almost no actual AD&D references. I actually forgot it had that tag when I was playing it.

Remember how I was telling you that when I would visit my cousins in Alabama, we would play Frog Bog on their Intellivision?  Well, they also had this game, but we couldn't figure it out as kids. But I remember it somehow all the same.

I discovered that game one day collecting Atari carts from flea markets. My friend and I put in Frogs and Flies and had a blast with it. Little did I know it was a copy of Frog Bog on Intellivision.

Looks fun, really detailed for it's time too.

They got a lot more dots on the screen for sure. This article I found comparing Atari 2600 with Intellivison is pretty cool and has some interesting comments.
