Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten Review

Its charm is undeniable, but is this complicated tactical RPG worth your time?

Just so I'm not pulling any punches, Disgaea 4 is the first game in the series I've actually played. While it has taken four iterations for me to take notice, it's clear to me why Disgaea has become a fan favorite and is often mentioned amongst the best games on the PlayStation 2 and 3. This unique flavor of tactical RPG gameplay comes complete with an engrossing world, characters, and a story that's rife with social commentary.

Cladun x2 Review

A super-customizable retro RPG by NIS.

I’ve never been more impressed by a title screen. Picture this: it’s a peaceful, moonlit night in 8-bit land. The pixelated moonlight is reflecting off of a pixelated island. There’s a catchy Japanese song playing (the one used in the official trailer). This one scene tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the game. It shows that NIS really understands its core fans and has put a lot of effort into making the game exactly what they want it to be.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Review

As I sit here, pondering how to approach a review for the game Hyperdimension Neptunia, my mind begins to wander...

What did I ever do to deserve this?

There's so much disappointment in virtually every aspect of Hyperdimension Neptunia. The concept is creative but doesn't work. The characters were created with seemingly no purpose except to be viewed as borderline risque versions of the companies or consoles they represent. The battle system, while operable, is completely convoluted, offering players too many meaningless, worthless attack options that grow to be too complex for any sort of general consumption. There are so many issues, it's hard to tell where to begin.

Z.H.P.: Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman Review

This roguelike is still punishingly tough, but it's the absolute best way to try out the genre.

Nippon Ichi Software is known for their unique, markedly Japanese titles that are big on humor and extremely unique in terms of gameplay. Z.H.P.: Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman is no exception to this rule, as the game delivers some well-written dialog, and unique roguelike gameplay that slightly alters the basic concepts of the sub-genre. Though the game is a small diversion from standard Mystery Dungeon gameplay, it's likely that most gamers won't connect with the title due to its high difficulty level and unforgiving design.
