I got 53,594 problems and a zombie ain’t one!

As Sony and Microsoft battle it out for a new generation of consoles, the place where things are most crucial is with the exclusive titles. With both consoles on a somewhat level playing field, everything comes down to the games, and the Xbox One has a strong first showing with Dead Rising 3, a title that gives a good look at what the new machine can do while also highlighting some things that could be improved.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record Review

He's covered wars, y'know!

Over a year ago, Capcom released the original Dead Rising 2. It starred brand new protagonist Chuck Greene, a character I actually liked. Unlike Frank West, he had a backstory worth caring about, as well as a personality befitting of a hero. In an effort to protect his daughter and deliver her the Zombrex she so desperately needed, he saved dozens of lives and uncovered the origins of the zombie outbreak in Fortune City. For whatever reason, fans didn't like Chuck Greene much and Capcom has since taken strides to nearly write him out of the series. Off the Record goes as far as retelling the same story with Frank West in his place. Given that the retelling comes with a slew of upgrades and an entirely new mode, it's most definitely a better game; however, Frank West still doesn't resonate with me as a character, nor does his signature picture-taking ability as a gameplay mechanic.

Dead Rising 2 Review

A major improvement to the Dead Rising formula.

The first Dead Rising left something to be desired in nearly all aspects of its gameplay. Saving stranded individuals was an exercise in frustration, throwing random items at zombies delivered limited entertainment, and the entire experience felt disjointed and random, even for a sandbox game. Fortunately, Dead Rising 2 manages to overcome many of the pitfalls of its predecessor, with a solid storyline that ties in neatly with the improved gameplay. Though many of the smaller issues remain, the changes made to the Dead Rising formula greatly improve the overall experience.
