Gungnir Preview

Say goodbye to two friends in one go.

While the PS Vita is struggling to build up its sales numbers, new game releases for the PSP have still dwindled to almost nothing.  Gungnir is one of the few games set to dribble out for the system this year, and it looks like a good reason to spin up your UMD drive once again.  A strategy role playing game that promises to touch on some heavy topics like racism and class struggles while throwing in some mechanics new to the SRPG genre, Gungnir is the latest and possibly final entry in the Dept. Heaven series.

FIFA Soccer 13 Preview

Finally, the player can talk back.

In a defensive style at their E3 press conference, Electronic Arts announced FIFA 13 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 with Kinect. Like a penalty kick, you probably did not see this one coming since last year.

Ys Seven Hands On Preview

The latest in the Ys series continues to improve the formula set in place many years ago.

Ys Seven is the first game developed specifically for the PSP by original developer Nihon Falcom. The team is continuing much of the progress they have made in the series by adding onto everything established in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim.

Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip Hands On Preview

I didn't realize they were porting Mario Tennis to the PSP.

Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip is the latest in the Hot Shots series and the second Hot Shots Tennis title in particular. I can't say I'm familiar with the original title, but I can say confidently that Hot Shots Tennis is more or less a Mario Tennis clone.

Madden NFL 11 Hands On Preview

Madden passes out a new game for 2011.

The Madden series has had it's ups and downs with their games on sucessful and unsuccessful experiments. 2011 is much of the same with their attempt at new ideas. Madden 2011 is available for the Wii, The Xbox 360, and the PS3. During E3 I tested out Madden for the Xbox 360.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 Hands On Preview

Phantasy Star catches my eye again with it's second iteration on the PSP.

Its been a while since I've played a Phantasy Star game that I liked. The formula used in episodes 1 & 2 for the Xbox seemed to work so well, only to never see quite the same design used in subsequent titles. The latest one on the PSP seems to take that engaging, combo based combat I used to love, and actually expand on it a little. Combos can now be linked into strings well beyond the 1-2-3 repeat strategy of previous titles. The pacing has speed up as well, with the player blowing through monsters at a nice steady pace as they move through the dungeons.

Dante's Inferno Hands On Preview

I guess I missed the part where Dante fought off big-titted women and babies with his huge scythe.

Dante's Inferno is two things to me right now, one of which is good and one of which is awful. Basically, it's just God of War, but it's also a travesty of a literary classic.

Tekken 6 Preview

There's a lot of cool additions (the new beat-'em-up campaign, improved online), but at the end of the day, you can still watch a guy in a tuxedo fight a panda bear.

Tekken 6 is a landmark title in the series for a few reasons. First, it is the first time the series is appearing on a non-Sony console. Second, it features the brawler Scenario Campaign mode that mixes Tekken with Final Fight. Lastly, it's got 40 characters and an outrageous amount of customization.

LittleBigPlanet Preview

Sackboy will sadly journey through new levels all by his lonesome this time around.

LittleBigPlanet for PSP is a stripped-down portable version of last year's PlayStation 3 release. While it still features the physics-based platforming, level creation, and cute aesthetic, this fall release is lacking multiplayer, and removes foreground and background movement.

FIFA 10 Preview

A new art style and some new snappy-titled modes lead the charged in this "over-the-top non-stop soccer game."

EA Sports' third Wii entry into the FIFA series is basically a clean slate as the game engine has been redesigned specifically for Nintendo's console. FIFA 10 drops the All-Play label and features refined controls, improved AI, and a brand new art style.
