Famitsu Researches Recent Japanese Console Price Drops

The magazine compares sales before and after a console's price drop.

Famitsu magazine recently published an article concerning the Japanese sales trend of consoles that have received a price drop within the past several weeks; more specifically the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and PSP.

The study was conducted from the first week of August and goes until the second week of October. A detailed chart of their findings can be seen below.

According to the chart, the PSP and Xbox 360 both received a modest sales boost in accordance with their price drops back in September, and have since seen a decline. The Wii's sales were seeing a steady decline until its price drop in early October, although the drop also coincided with the release of Wii Fit Plus. Finally, the PS3 saw the largest increase in sales due to the price drop and slimmer version of the console. Since then, PS3 sales in Japan have been steadily decreasing.

The PS3 was by far the most successful during the price drop race, seeing an increase of 707% in sales. Although the Xbox 360 saw a very small upwards trend, throughout the measured period, their sales actually declined 70%. Finally, the Wii saw a 29% increase, and the PSP had a 126% boost.

No surprises here. I have to imagine that Sony feels pretty dumb right now, losing sales for all this time just because their price was too high.

The person I'm referring to is, of course, Michael Alvarado, otherwise known as Michael117.
