Reports of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2's demise have been greatly exaggerated?

We’ve reported on some sad news in the video game industry as of late. From massive layoffs to full-on studio closures, the past couple months have been pretty rough for some game makers. Thankfully, it’s not all bad news, and we can report today that at least one of those stories has a bit of a happy development. You may remember our report not too long ago about the studio closure of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World. Well, it seems like that’s not entirely the case, after all.

Bethesda Wins Lawsuit Over Fallout

Interplay no longer has a license to develop a Fallout MMO.

In what is surely the first huge story of 2012, it was announced today that Bethesda Softworks has won the rights to the entire Fallout franchise, lock, stock, and barrel. The lawsuit, filed back in 2009 against original Fallout developer Interplay, had to do with a proposed MMO set in the popular wasteland series. This comes after a loss against Mojang, the company behind Minecraft, over the use of the word “scrolls” for the indie company’s next game.

Steam Passes 40 Million Accounts

The PC game portal posts some impressive numbers.

If you play PC games, it’s pretty much impossible to not love Steam. Between insane sales (like the recent holiday sale), built-in achievements, and a large selection of games both big and small, it’s tough for competing services like EA’s Origin to keep up. That may seem like an obvious statement, but Valve released some figures today that show just how far ahead the PC digital download portal is.

Scarygirl Coming to XBLA, PSN, and PC

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, players can dive into the game in just 2 weeks.

Square Enix announced today that they plan to publish Scarygirl on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC. Appearing as soon as January 18 on XBLA, with a January 24 PSN release to follow, players will be able to action-platform with the titular, tentacle-armed protagonist. Scarygirl is haunted by bad dreams and sets out on a quest to determine their meaning.

The minifig version of Batman is back, and he's brought some friends along with him.

We reported not too long ago about the impending announcement of a new LEGO Batman game, and now that announcement has come. LEGO Batman 2 is indeed coming, and it will feature more characters than just the ones known to hang around Gotham City.

Latest Game Informer Reveals New XCom Strategy Game

Firaxis states the new title is already in the works.

XCom is a franchise that, until two years ago, many assumed was dead and gone.  In 2010, however, longtime fans rejoiced at headlines that revealed a new title was in the works.  In most cases, though, this excitement only lasted as long as it took to read the article under those headlines, which revealed that this latest entry would actually be a first person shooter instead of an overhead strategy game.  Internet outrage soon followed.

BioWare is Working on the Long Server Queues for The Old Republic

Highly populated servers can see waits of up to an hour, but servers are slowly freeing up space.

After 6 years in development and a budget that’s rumored to rival some major motion picture costs, BioWare has finally launched their ambitious new MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Our own Rob Ottone was lucky enough to attend the special launch event in New York, which you can read about here. However, any MMO launch is bound to have some hiccups and difficulties at first. TOR is no different, and the game has been reported to have serious waiting queues for some of the high population servers. Help is on the way, though, according to the SW:TOR official forums.
