Nerds Without Pants Episode 15: Potpourri

We went a little off the rails...

Hello again! Julian here, joined as always by Patrick and Rob for another episode of Nerds Without Pants. No topic this time...we decided to just wing it with some random discussion. Yes, a hodge podge of talking points brought together to form a pleasant bouquet. Some potpourri, if you will. We can all enjoy a little P O T. And if you got that obscure Laugh In joke, congratulations! I love you.

Orgarhythm Review

A unique concept that fails in execution.

Aside from ambitious, the only other word that can be used to describe Orgarhythm is disappointing. Given that Tak Hirai of Space Channel 5, Shenmue, and Meteos fame was behind the unique blend of action, strategy, and rhythm gameplay, I couldn’t help but be excited. However, the execution of these concepts simply doesn’t match up to the ambition of the idea.

Nerds Without Pants Episode 5: 'Til All Are One!

One shall stand...one shall fall.

Well, we goofed. Due to circumstances beyond our control, this episode of NWP is woefully lacking a second segment. Worry not though, true believers! We’ll be bringing you the intended topic of this episode (vices and video games) next week. So sit back and enjoy what we’ve been playing and some bloopers.

Heroes of Ruin Review

Advances in the study of loots are needed to make Heroes of Ruin be anything special.

The age old question of what makes a loot phat has yet to be answered.  There is no magic formula for the presentation of said loots, nor is there an equation for the perfect mixture of merely acceptable loots and those that are in fact phat.  Once researchers have uncovered the perfect recipe, applying this know-how to Heroes of Ruin might make it something fantastic instead of what it is now:  completely and thoroughly decent.

Heroes of Ruin Hands On Preview

Square-Enix gives us an online hack-n-slash experience unlike anything we've seen before on a Nintendo handheld.

Nintendo’s struggles with their online strategy (if you can call it that) are widely known and widely reviled.  We’ve seen some slight improvements as the years click by, but it looks like Square-Enix might be the ones to teach the big N how to really do things right on the 3DS with Heroes of Ruin.  Square-Enix and design house n-Space picked the perfect sort of game to leverage the online functionality of the 3DS – a dungeon crawler.  Keeping far away from the frame-by-frame criticality of an FPS or fighting game, a game in the vein of Diablo should let Nintendo’s network stretch its legs without really angering the hardcore twitch gamers.  Although already released in Europe, Heroes of Ruin doesn’t launch in North America until July 17th, and the online multiplayer is just one aspect that has us sharpening our swords in anticipation.

Dead Space 3 Preview

Tau Volantis isn't the only thing that leaves me cold about Dead Space 3.

Dead Space 2 was one of my favorite games of 2011, and when rumblings began to stir about a third game in the series I waited with giddy anticipation for details. Now that the game has been officially announced and the first gameplay has been shown I can’t help but find myself…concerned about this title. While I see enough of the core DNA of Dead Space in the E3 demo, it feels like the game is losing some of its identity, not unlike what happened with the Mass Effect series.

Dead Space 3 to be Announced at E3

Severed necromorph is a dish best served cold.

We reported some time ago about the existence of Dead Space 3, and recently we found out that the game is due out sometime in 2013. In fact, it seems as if everyone in the video game industry has found dirt on Dead Space 3, but EA has been oddly mum on the subject. Enter the Electronic Entertainment Expo: bastion of all things exciting and upcoming in video games, where EA is set to finally reveal their poorly kept secret. That’s right, kiddos—Isaac Clarke is coming back, and next week we’ll have the first real look at this hotly anticipated horror game.
