Tour de 64: Conker's Bad Fur Day

We've all had one of those days...

Truly unique. A very memorable experience. When describing any other game, these phrases would likely be taken as a compliment. But Conker’s Bad Fur Day isn’t just any other game, it’s a twisted take on the generally cheerful worlds of the typical platformer. Chalk full of blood and gore, alcohol and drug use, and more curse words than an episode of South Park, it ranges from a clever parody to sickening immaturity. The gameplay itself contains some interesting ideas, but it ultimately falls short of reaching its full potential.

Tour de 64: Command and Conquer

Shouldn't that be “divide and conquer?"

Command and Conquer is a real-time strategy game released for the PC in 1995, and ported to the Nintendo 64 several years later. It brings with it updated graphics and a few bonus missions, but the core gameplay remains the same. With clunky controls and straightforward missions, the game doesn't offer anything unique, but the foundation is still solid.

Tour de 64: ClayFighter 63 1/3 and ClayFighter: The Sculptor's Cut

The missing 2/3 of the game must have been quality control.

These are two versions of the last game released in the ClayFighter series, which spawned as a spoof of the fighting games which were all the rage in the early-to-mid 90's. As I'm no fan of fighters, I don't really know how this series compares with traditional fighting games, but I always appreciate the seldom appearance of a videogame parody. Unfortunately, this one seems to be all style and no substance, and even the theme can wear thin.

Tour de 64: Chopper Attack

Though not a part of the Strike series, Chopper Attack appears to follow in its footsteps, providing a helicopter shooting experience from an overhead view. The base action is fairly solid, but suffers from a few poor design trappings and lack of variety. It's also on the brief side, making its merits short-lived.

My 20th Anniversary of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System

As many of you are likely aware, this past August marked the 20th anniversary of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Despite this, no one else here wrote an article on it, and I feel this website needs at least one article about this monumental console of gaming history. However, rather than list off what are I feel are the best or most influential games, I'm instead going to talk about the aspect of the system which left the biggest impression on me: the symphonic melodies produced by its seemingly meager 16-bit MIDI.

Tour de 64: Charlie Blast's Territory

Why is he destroying his own territory?

With a name like Charlie Blast’s Territory, I was expecting a game as awful as the pun. What might sound like a ripoff of Bomberman is actually a puzzle game involving pushing explosives together to set them all off in one chain, thus clearing the stage. There are many elements to instill variety into the gameplay, which usually distract from the lackluster presentation. Although it is short-lived, there are some truly mind-bending puzzles awaiting those up to the challenge.

Tour de 64: Chameleon Twist 2

Chameleon on the rocks with a twist

After having some fun with the first Chameleon Twist despite its issues and simple gameplay, I was excited to try the sequel. With the hopes that it would improve upon at least some of the problems with the original, I slid the cartridge into my Nintendo 64 and flipped the power switch.

Tour de 64: Chameleon Twist

Not a twist of lemon, sadly.

With companies like Nintendo and Rare releasing great platformers on the Nintendo 64, most of the other ones in between were largely ignored. Not that it wasn't for good reason, as those games were some of the best ones created, but it is nice to now catch up on the ones I passed over. Chameleon Twist doesn't offer anything unique or groundbreaking, but it's still a fun, quirky game while it lasts, and is worth checking out after completing the Marios and Banjos of the system.
