Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Review

Kane & Lynch 2 was a game that should have never existed.

I never played Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, the first game in the Kane & Lynch series. Like most I was very familiar with it as being one of the worst games to be made available in this console generation. The game made more headlines for allegedly causing the firing of a GameSpot reviewer over a bad score, than for anything particular about the game itself. I assumed, incorrectly, with the tarnish of shady company ethics along with horrible story and production quality that the franchise was dead and gone, ready to be buried in the desert with E.T. for the Atari.

DarkStar One: Broken Alliance Review

A great space combat simulator for the console market with enough hours of enjoyable gameplay to make up for any odd quirks.

There has been a pretty severe drought in the console world for the space combat simulator game, something Gaming Minds Studios remedies nicely with Dark Star One: Broken Alliance. This enjoyable and easily accessible game provides hours of quirky fun, allowing players to fly through an insanely large galaxy, shooting pirates, escorting ships, and making mercantile trades. The story lacks depth and the later hours tend to drag, but the precise controls and satisfaction as you become a force in the cosmos far outweighs that.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair Review

A potentially great game destroyed by a complete lack of usability and focus on excessive grinding.

Playing Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is a lot like what I imagine living with an alcoholic stepfather would be like. You find yourself in a situation with no guidance or information on what to do besides the general desire not to screw up and every time you think you have figured out the correct way to behave, you find yourself beaten for thinking you can do better and being “uppity”. By description, an up-to-six player co-op game where you can choose from the A team of the Castlevania universe, Harmony of Despair sounded like it could have been one of the best Xbox Live Arcade games to grace the system. Sadly, this is not the case, and what’s worse is that the game in itself is not a bad experience.

Transformers: War for Cybertron Review

A game that has all the necessary components to break free of the licensing curse, but fails in its execution.

Mr. Perlman was right, war never changes, at least when it comes to video games, it seems. Take out the fact that the protagonist in Transformers: War for Cybertron are giant walking robots and one can easily believe they are playing any generic shooter that have graced us in the last twenty years, bad AI and all.

Risk: Factions Review

The classic board game is now available in digital form, complete with a brand new mode.

I have a rather complicated history with Risk. Growing up I loved playing anything that involved the concept of strategy, mainly because I ranked on the lower spectrum of twitch reflexes amongst my group of friends. Of course Risk falls into my category of preference, but after playing it over time I realized it had two distinct problems.

Mass Effect 2 Review

A little more action, a little less RPG, a lot of awesome.

Mass Effect 2, the appropriately titled sequel to Mass Effect for the Xbox 360 is an excellent game and is a marked improvement, at the very least in the gameplay department, over its predecessor. In the game you continue your role as Commander Shepherd; Human Alliance soldier, Council Specter and all around badass who’s on a quest to save the galaxy.
