How times change

I like most people here at Pixlbit have done my fair share of video game playing. Over the years I have noticed that games tend to be more immersive, story driven, and lately very very open. I still like to play Super Mario Bros 3, and Punchout, but those games run on a track system where you can control a few variables. Some games today give you so much control that it makes your gaming experience that much better. Games such as Skyrim where you can literally do anything you want, is such a game. You can define your character however you wish. You could be honorable and noble, or a no good lying dog. The choice is yours to make. This also extends to MMO's. I began playing Final Fantasy 11 as a Galka Dark Knight for a year and switched over to World of Warcraft, which I played for almost 4 Years, then I played SWTOR for a month and called it quits altogether. I have stayed away from MMO's for almost a year and half just  because of the feeling that I get of being in a hamster wheel. I know that that may not be the case for everyone, but it is for me. Having said that I have now begun to play EVE online. this game is an MMO, but I find it to be completely different from other MMOs. First is the fact that you can do and be anything you want from the get go. You have the freedom to train yourself to be anything, you don't have to pick a class or spec at the start. Instead you begin with missions that show case different types of jobs that are available. You could be a miner, a soldier, industrialist, mogul, and so on, you could even be a pirate that goes out and takes from other players. This to me has given me a reason to play this MMO, the fact that I do not have to do missions if I don't want to and still progress is great. In short, I am playing this game month to month and so far I am really having fun with it. Maybe what I want from an MMO has changed and I think it has for the better.

Not having to choose a class or something at the outset does sound awesome, I hate starting with a class I end up hating. I don't play MMOs (don't have the equipment to, really, unless it's Farmville, but I have no interest in that), but this sometimes applies to games I play anyway.

I've read good things about Eve Online but mmos in general don't do it for me. Maybe it's because they require a huge time investment? (Then again, I enjot rpgs and they require a huge time investment as well!)

BrokenH,

You are correct on how MMO's require a huge time commitment. Thats another reason why I like EVE. If I only have time to play an hour then I only play for that hour and then go do something else. Another thing I like is that your skills are trained real time even when you are off line, another reason why I like it.
