PixlTalk Episode 71: Back To Games

We move away from E3 and talk about what we've been playing.

E3 has come and gone and it’s time to focus on what’s really important, the games. This week we have a casual discussion covering what we’ve been playing and what we hope to play in the near future. We also delve off to discuss how 2013 is shaping up to be one of the craziest years ever for game releases, and the ludicrous notion that unfinished games receive awards at E3.

As always we hope you enjoy and let us know what you think in the comments below.

I love the first two Alien movies. J-Bone, did you ever play the Alien's game Alien Trilogy on PS1? I had that game and played it when I was a kid, and I never beat it. It scared the shit out of me because it was really darkly lit, it was hard for me to tell where doors were, and there were face suckers and warrior form zenomorphs tearing me apart the entire way through a level. Scary game, that's for true. The sound of the zenos was terrifying too. The sound clips that played when they attacked were offputting and even the sound when they died was weird. Freaky-deaky. I've never talked with anybody about that game ever since lol, and I've never heard people reference it in gaming communities either. Was I the only kid playing it? It was like Doom with xenomorphs, I imagine people would want to check it out.

My favorite Alien game is actually Alien 3 on SNES. No, not the Genesis version. The SNES version had an awesome Metroid-style layout and some amazing graphics. But I agree with 117...Alien Trilogy was a helluva scary FPS.

My favorite Alien game is...nothing because I've never really played one. I tried the demo for the Aliens vs Predator game that came out a couple years ago but that's it. But I'll reiterate: Isn't it strange how many Alien games have been made? I mean for better or worse, they're a bonafide video game franchise.

Yeah, the Aliens arcade game was pretty awesome, too. It was basically a Final Fight-style beat-'em-up with guns.

Kid Gloves: When Hand Holding Goes Too Far

As I was moving into the end game of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, I was tasked with finding three power couplings to unlock a door. It was a simple enough job, but in a game that had been almost entirely a linear affair, I was glad to have the rails taken off if even for a small section. It turned out that this wasn’t the case; any time I got remotely close to one of the power couplings Doktor would chime in on my codec to inform me that I was near my objective. Frowning, I destroyed the coupling and repeated the task with Doktor telling me exactly where to go and what to do. It made me realize just how much game design has changed in recent years, and what needs to be done to combat the need for constant hand holding that game designers have developed.
