Nerds Without Pants

Nerds Without Pants Episode 3: The Hardest Trophy

FACT: Listening to this podcast in its entirety will net you a platinum trophy and 1000 gamerscore.

And we’re back! Scheduling problems and technical difficulties can’t keep your favorite nerd trio from removing their pants and talking about some awesome video games. We kick it off as always with what we’ve been playing, including PlayStation All-Stars, Little Big Planet Karting, Dyad, and Robot Rob’s hatred of Batman: Arkham City. Julian confesses his new nerd addiction: table top games!

The topic this episode is everything trophy and achievement. Gamers have been addicted to these little pieces of digital flair for years now, and Patrick wants to know how we feel about them as a group. Rob spends the episode in complete denial of his achievement lust, while Julian and Patrick completely admit to their addictions. We talk about our first achievements, the ones we tried the hardest for, and the ones that seemed particularly lame. We also talk about Rob’s atavistic fear of Disney’s Cars before closing things out with some shameless self-promotion.

Haha, oh Achievements. I used to be somewhat of an achievement whore, even stooping to low depths as to rent Avatar and get the easy 1000. That said i have perfected worthy games since then, like Tales of Vesperia (my most coveted 1000), Transformers: War for Cybertron, and Mass Effect 2. Im working toward completing ME3 but ill get that perfect in due time, I still plan on playing that game over.

The most annoying achievement for me must have been "To Points Unknown" in Tales of Vesperia, where you have to travel 100,000 km. There is no indicator of your progress and it doesnt carry over into new game plus. Not to mention, by completing the 60 hour game, you only travel a fraction of that distance so many long nights were dedicated to getting that one. It was satisfying, but i hated trying to get that one.

Stupidest achievement was in Prince of Persia, forgotten sands where you get points for turning down the difficulty. I didnt get why they would reward that, but eh.

Hardest, but most satisfying was beating God of War 3 on titan...the Scorpion and Zeus were friggin terrifyin on that difficulty, but i made it through.

One of the most memorable achievements for me was in Prince of Persia 2008 where you get an achievement for simply holding Elika in your arms for a minute. It was simple, but touching at the same time. That game is terribly underrated...

Anyway, thats my 2 cents, at least what i can remember of it. theres def. more achievement stories from me, but you get the point. I agree for the most part though, achievements are cool. They help players get the most out of games they enjoy. Only playing games for achievements is kind of shallow, but it does happen at times. Nowadays, i only strive if i like the game enough, since time is more scarse than it was a few years back. Anyway, im off to play The Last Story...

You lost my respect with Avatar and gained it back with Vesperia. Also Transformers. I personally can't stand multiplayer achievements, being a lone wolf in gaming, but there was a hot second there where I thought I'd get all the multiplayer points for that game.

yeah, in Transformers the last achievement i needed was for maxing out the levels of each class and then i had to prestige to get it. only reason it took so long was that it takes FOREVER to level up in that game, so i mostly played on weekends with big EXP bonuses. The MP was fun tho, so it wasnt a big problem, but i they needed it. I mean at one point there was a weekend where there was a 25x exp bonus so i guess the devs knew.

And sorry about Avatar, at the time i was more concerned about gamer score than the effort it took to get it, but now, I dont, lol
