Atlus Celebrates Demon's Souls 2nd Anniversary

Oh, it hurts so good!

Dark Souls has just come out thanks to Namco Bandai, but that doesn’t mean that Demon’s Souls has been forgotten by publisher Atlus. The company is celebrating the two year anniversary of the notoriously punishing RPG in style—by making the game even more punishing by way of a “World Tendency” event.

Starting today and running until October 17th, the land of Boletaria will shift to a pure white World Tendency. This makes the game much easier, and opens up pathways and access to items that are usually closed off to players. But before you start rejoicing, keep in mind that from October 18th through the end of the month Boletaria will shift to pure black. That means the game gets as tough as it can get, but also means that players have chances of earning greater rewards.

This isn’t the first time that Atlus and the From Software team have held these World Tendency events, but it’s interesting to note that the servers for the game were originally supposed to close in 2010. They have already been extended multiple times, and Atlus recently announced that the Demon’s Souls servers would continue into 2012. “When people get together and talk about the games that have forever changed the face of the industry, Demon’s Souls remains one of the most salient titles to discuss,” said Atlus President and CEO Shinichi Suzuki in a press release. “We are incredibly proud to continue to support the game’s online functionality and host World Tendency events as long as we can. We’re not just the game’s publisher: we’re fans, too.”

This also marks the second time in as many weeks that the Demon’s/Dark Souls team has tinkered with the game servers to punish players. When the company learned of some people getting their hands on Dark Souls early due to stores breaking street date, they flooded the game with max level phantom characters to hunt down unsuspecting players. It’s this type of “tough love” that has given the “Souls” games their mystique.

We’ve just started running our new “Demon’s Souls Travel Log” series, so check back all month to see how the World Tendency event impacts the journey! And if you want to play along, Demon’s Souls is now a Greatest Hits title priced at 19.99.

As soon as I get my PS3, I'm going to have to at least rent this game. I've heard too much about Demon's Souls, both good and bad and I can't run from it.

That's it...now that I know the world is shifting to Pure White today, I'm picking this up and making my run of it.

From the little I've played so far and the discussions I've heard about the game in the past couple of years I think it's definitely something that should be tried if you like action RPGs at all.

Oh, and when I read the part about the Pure White World Tendency, I rejoiced. Until I read the part about the Pure Black. One thing's for sure...it's going to make for some entertaining Travel Logs!
