GamePro is Coming to an End

A recent shift to quarterly printings and an online focus wasn’t enough to save the long-running gaming publication.

After more than twenty years of providing gaming news, reviews, and ProTips, GamePro has printed its last issue.  After shifting to a quarterly printing schedule earlier in the year to try and save the publication, GamePro still wasn't able to make the magazine last.  In addition, the gamepro.com website will cease to exist in its current form after December 5th

Scads of changes had taken place at GamePro in recent years to try and salvage the print and online gaming enterprise, starting most notably with the 2009 hiring of game journalism veteran John Davison of EGM fame.  Davison came on staff and revamped the entire web and print philosophies of GamePro and then left in less than a year’s time.  Since then, the publication had cut down to a quarterly printing schedule and tried to bolster its online appeal.  Apparently both measures were not enough, causing the GamePro owners, IDG Entertainment, to shut down both the magazine and gamepro.com site

The business at GamePro will be shifted to creating custom publications for events like E3 and other promotional material under the new moniker GamePro Custom Solutions.  The gamepro.com domain will redirect to pcworld.com where a GamePro channel will provide the usual gaming news, reviews, and editorial.  There has been no information provided about possible layoffs under this realignment.

This is a real shame. Growing up, I read GamePro, but always preferred EGM, as it seemed to grow up with me. But when John Davison came on (one of my heroes), I really loved the direction the magazine took. GamePro had an amazing staff for a time, with Ray Barnholt, Justin Haywald, Jason Wilson, and Kat Bailey among others. I'm sad to see it go.

Agreed. This is a sad day, but I only have myself to blame.

Now the death watch moves to EGM (again) as it just shifted to bi-monthly.

As much as I adore the old EGM, I've had a hard time getting into the new one. I blame Brady Fiechter. The new EGM feels a lot like a Dave Halverson joint, and while I have nothing against him or his publications, GameFan/Play had a very different tone and approach than EGM under Davison, Hsu, or Mielke.
