David Jaffe Would Like to Avoid Online Pass for Twisted Metal

The outspoken developer says they have a "mountain to climb" to success.

David Jaffe has long had a reputation for being an extremely outspoken developer. This is rare in an industry where so much information comes from a multitude of PR reps that are scared to let the game makers talk directly to the press. Jaffe has earned his right to speak his mind, considering that he’s responsible for two of the biggest selling PlayStation franchises in history.  Those franchises would be God of War and Twisted Metal, which was the focus of a recent interview. There were some interesting revelations in this talk, including the fact that Jaffe isn’t too keen on the idea of shipping Twisted Metal with an online pass.

In an interview with Eurogamer, the creator of Twisted Metal seems very aware that bringing back the car combat series is not without its hurdles. Online passes could hinder the game reaching a large audience, and Jaffe is hesitant to go the online pass route. "I know that we have been asked to look into some code work for it but I don't believe that a decision has been made at this point,” he says.

"I'd actually prefer that we don't do it, even though it's probably good business, only because we have such a mountain to climb in terms of gaining people's good faith, especially in Europe, and really letting people know that this is a title that's worth getting excited about."

Even though he’s not happy with the idea of online passes, Jaffe realizes that it’s not his call to make. "It's not my call and I'd totally understand if Sony as a company said 'Look, this is a mandate that permeates all of our titles. We're not making selective choices'. Those are decisions that I'm no longer privy to as I don't work for Sony any more."

David Jaffe left Sony after completing God of War and formed Eat Sleep Play. His company has been called upon by Sony to work on the new Twisted Metal reboot, which has been delayed until February 2012 to polish the online modes and iron out the bugs. We have our own opinions when it comes to online passes, and you can read about them here.

Real excited for this game and I hope Dave Jaffe gets his wish and Twisted Metal ships without an online pass. However, I know Sony had previously stated they want to include online passes for all its first party games.

I was surprised to see Jaffe so reigned in. It makes me wonder if there was a Sony PR rep right next to him as he was answering questions.
