USA Today Talks All Things Halo with the Creative Director of 343 Industries

Frank O’Connor discusses upcoming videogames, comics, videos, and the Halo movie in this recent interview.

Halo has been met with critical acclaim ever since its premier on the original Xbox eight years ago. Bungie’s latest installment of the series, Halo 3: ODST for the Xbox 360 has already sold 2.5 million copies worldwide, generating more than $125 million in revenue.

Given its massive popularity, many may wonder what the future holds for the popular series. In a recent interview with USA Today, the Creative Director for 343 Industries (Microsoft's Halo Division), Frank O’ Connor, discusses what to expect over the next several years.

First up is the upcoming title, Halo: Reach, which is currently in production by Bungie and is expected to release sometime next year. According to O’ Connor, Halo: Reach is a “a prequel to Halo 1 ... [that] will cover events in and around the planet Reach.”

Next up on the Halo agenda is the five-issue comic series Halo: Hellijumper, which follows the two ODST characters Dutch and Romeo on one of their earlier missions. O’ Connor states, “You get a little back story on those guys and you also get to follow them in action a way that you cannot in the video game because you are often playing as the Rookie." The third comic in this series was just recently released, and fans can expect issue four on October 28.

However, this isn’t the only comic series in development based off of the Halo universe. A brand new series, titled Halo: Bloodline will take fans through the secret operations conducted by the cybernetic Spartan soldiers. O’ Conner elaborates, “The Spartans in that series are only identified by number to keep and maintain secrecy so there's no way to find out because they wear helmets and identify each other by numbers." The first edition in this series will be released on December 23 of this year.

With comics and videogames out of the way, O’ Connor makes his way on to video, mentioning a new anime series created by Japan’s top anime studios. The series, titled Halo Legends, will be making its way to shelves next year, and previews of the series will be available sometime this fall on XBLA.

USA also questioned O’Connor regarding details about the Halo movie. "We're being very careful to pick the right time and the right partner," O’Connor stated. As for now, the movie originally planned for development alongside director Peter Jackson, is on hold.

O’Connor concluded his interview with USA Today by commenting on the future of the Halo series. He stated, “I think that Master Chief's fate, Cortana's fate and the identity of that giant, dark planet at the ending (on the game's hardest skill level) — that's a spoiler — are probably big mysteries that would be irritating if they were just cliffhangers.” “We do have a plan that goes out at least six years. Eventually, it will become very apparent that there is a plan for the way the canon all ties together and the way the comic books and the novels all tie together."
