Epic Mickey Originally Not Developed For Wii

An interview with Warren Spector reveals how the game eventually was transitioned to Nintendo's machine.

In a recent interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Epic Mickey developer Warren Spector revealed that Epic Mickey was not originally in development for Wii.

According to Spector, Epic Mickey was originally destined to be released on three other platforms: PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. One day, Spector had a conversation with Graham Hopper, the boss for Disney Interactive, and was asked by Hopper, "What does it take to deliver on the goals we have for this product?" To which Spector replied, "Well, you need enough time and enough money to be competitive. And it'd be awfully nice if we could focus on one platform."

Regardless of Spector's request, Hopper was curious to know if the title could be ported to Wii. After some discussion, Spector concluded that it couldn't be done because many of the design ideas "just wouldn't work." Instead of pushing Spector to also port the game to Wii, in a completely 180 degree decision, Hopper posed the question, "What do you think about a Wii exclusive?" To which Spector replied, "Holy cow - yeah!"

From the point that decision was made in 2008, the team has been hard at work creating Epic Mickey solely for the Wii. Spector commented on the choice by stating, "They walked away from three other platforms - no other publisher on the planet would have done that. It was a magic moment for me. No-one has even mentioned other formats since that point."

The full interview with Warren Spector will be revealed in issue 50 of Official Nintendo Magazine, and is expected to hit store shelves on November 20.
