PSP minis, a couple of fixes, and data transfer feature will arrive on PS3 soon with an optional firmware update.

The European PlayStation Blog has revealed the contents of the latest PS3 firmware update. Unlike most firmware updates, this update will be completely optional.

The headlining feature of this update is the playability of PSP Minis on the PS3. This feature was rumored last week, but the date of arrival was unknown. If your PSP and PS3 are linked to the same PSN account, you will be allowed to download the PSP Minis to your PS3 free of charge.

The other major feature is the Data Transfer Utility. The aptly named utility will allow you migrate data from one PS3 to another.

In order to use the utility you will need to connect an Ethernet cable to both PS3 consoles and follow the on screen prompts. When the transfer is initiated, games, save data, and videos downloaded can be transferred to the new PS3. The data from the other PS3 will be deleted.

The only information that can be left on both PS3s are personal media files. Unfortunately, the blog entry does not reveal if protected save data that normally can't be copied will be able to be transferred to the new PS3.

Downloaded content transferred will need to be activated by connecting to your PSN account on the new PS3. Without activation, the data is unusable.

Finally, the update will also fix bluetooth controller pairing issues. Players can download the firmware update at some point in December.
