Tekken 6 Preview

There's a lot of cool additions (the new beat-'em-up campaign, improved online), but at the end of the day, you can still watch a guy in a tuxedo fight a panda bear.

Tekken 6 is a landmark title in the series for a few reasons. First, it is the first time the series is appearing on a non-Sony console. Second, it features the brawler Scenario Campaign mode that mixes Tekken with Final Fight. Lastly, it's got 40 characters and an outrageous amount of customization.

Tekken 6 is based on the 2008 arcade release Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, which was an update to the original Tekken 6 arcade game. It features 40 different characters, and each character has their own set of customizable equipment and unique ending cut scene. So you could take the kangaroo Roger Jr. and throw some armor on him that makes him look like a "space marine" according to one PR representative. There are thousands of pieces of equipment to gain that can be purchased with the in-game money you gain.

The biggest addition to the console version is easily the robust Scenario Campaign mode. Basically, it's a cooperative brawler in which you take your Tekken fighting skills to the streets and beat up on generic enemies and the other characters. There are 40 stages, one for each of the game's 40 characters. You face one of the characters at the end of every stage, and if you beat them, you can select them for later levels. The story of Scenario Campaign focuses on two newcomers, Lars and Alisa, and there are numerous cut scenes that feature the pair. You can also find different items that will give different boosts to your characters, and there will be online co-op for this mode.

On the whole, the online uses new net code that will make it smoother than previous games in the series. Additionally, players can download ghosts of the top-ranked online fighters and practice against them.

Tekken 6 is set for an October 27 release date for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
