Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! Hands On Preview

Another Wacky Adventure Time title, with an interesting premise.

Last year, Adventure Time: Hey Ice King, Why’d You Steal our Garbage? surprised gamers by paying homage to niche games like Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link as well as being a good representation of the television series. This year, Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW! serves as a follow up, but is a much different game than its predecessor. Rather than being a 2D side scrolling adventure game, this game shares more in common with dungeon crawlers like Gauntlet and Diablo.

The demo I played emphasizes co-op, loot, and diving deeper into huge dungeons. I played with three other players; each took control of familiar characters from the series like Cinnamonbun, Finn, and Jake while I took control of Flame Princess. Each character seemed to have specific strengths and weaknesses. Flame Princess didn’t have as much health as some of the other characters, but she had a powerful ranged attack that other characters didn’t have access to.

As we explored the dungeon, we fought many enemies and collected loot which varied from money and health to weapons that we could equip. There were weapons like Ice Swords and Staves, to silly ones like a gun that shot out cats.

I was surprised by the difficulty. Perhaps it was because it was an unprepared dip into one of the dungeons, but enemies dealt pretty high damage and if I didn’t defend properly (or pay attention to the environmental hazards), I would find myself dead quicker than expected. Additionally, sometimes my partners decided to disperse, making it hard to travel from point A to point B, so I realized sticking together and coordinating was the best way to play.

After descending a few levels into the dungeon, I realized that this could definitely make for a fun co-op experience. The gameplay was simple and far from deep but the co-op and fan service was enough of a hook to keep me intrigued. I’m curious to see how this game holds up, but I definitely think it will be worth a look – especially for fans of Adventure Time – when it releases on November 12.

I was curious about this game.  While I still haven't gotten around to watching Adventure Time myself, some of my closest friends are big fans.  We had a blast co-oping Dragon's Crown, so another cool co-op RPG experience is very tempting.

Yeah I'm hoping to get to review this.  Just got a review copy of the Regular Show game last night.

Why'd You Steal Our Garbage is available for under $20 at Walmart by me. I've been tempted to pick it up because I thought the demo was fun.
