Remembering SaGa Frontier

If you hadn't read the PixlBit feature about Operation Rainfall and its impact on JRPGs, check it out here. The feature made me think about when I first got into RPGs, which was about 10 years ago. I started buying every RPG I could find, whether I finished them or not, and most of them were JRPGs. One of the first games I got was SaGa Frontier. For a newcomer to the genre, I didn't have much luck with the game but I found the worlds, multiple characters, and battle system so interesting that I still aspire to be able to play and complete it. To be fair, it isn't what I would call a great RPG or even a great game. It's definitely for fans of the genre only and its open world gameplay further exacerbates that fact. Nonetheless, fans of the genre should check it out. It's relatively cheap, as a used copy can be found for around $15. Check out the video below for an overview of the game, as well as some gameplay.

Maybe I made the mistake of starting with Red. Oh well. What are your memories of SaGa Frontier? Have you played it before or have you never heard of the game? There hasn't been an entry in the SaGa Frontier series since Unlimited SaGa on the PS2, almost 10 years ago. Should we see a revival of the franchise? Comment and let me know.

I rather liked the sprite work actually.  It did clash with the pre-rendered backgrounds, but polygons were so primitive in the 32 bit era that I didn't mind it at all.  I wouldn't mind playing it myself.  Maybe we could set something up?

What did you have in mind?

Nothing concrete yet, but I was thinking about doing something where we talk about old games that people should know about, but not necessarily play, and perhaps play them in their stead.  Not like a Let's Play, something more literary.  I can't recommend someone actually play SaGa Frontier, or some other games like the Manna game on the Playstation, but I think they should be informed about them seeing as they are actually important titles.

You mean like an overview? A video game overview rather than review or primer?
