Do We Need God of War Multiplayer?

Details about the upcoming prequel in the God of War series have surfaced and chief among them is the inclusion of multiplayer. A full description of this new addition to the series can be read here. I had a feeling that this might happen and I know it makes sense from a business perspective but I just have to ask the question: do we need multiplayer in a God of War game?

The series is known for being a strong single player experience and with the multiplayer landscape dominated by shooters like Call of Duty, Gears of War and Battlefield, is there any chance of this game gaining a online presence? I'm not saying the game won't be successful. People will buy the game for the story driven single player but I predict it's going to be hard to find people online to play within a few months after the game is released.

I should also note that I'm not knocking the quality of the multiplayer. The multiplayer could actually be good. God of War is essencially a beat-em-up and that genre has lent itself well to more than one player. The futility of it all is what the problem is. Not to mention the resources going into this new feature as opposed to the now "slightly shorter" single player.

Do I want to play this game? Sure but I'm by no means excited for it. This is the fourth console game in the series and the sixth overall since 2005, not to mention two HD collections. The original God of War was a mind blowing experience and really showed how action packed and intense a game could be. However, like many action movies, too many iterations have diluted the experience and with this unneeded multiplayer now being added, God of War Ascension is just another entry in a solid but tired franchise.

Do we need it? No, not at all.

That said, i think it will be more beneficial than hurtful. One of my major gripes with God of War 3 was that after finishing the game, there was absolutely no use for it anymore except for adding to my collection. People are looking for value in their purchases now and Multiplayer is the best route for them. Making a 20 to 30 hour campaign doesnt work with GoW's forumula, so it only makes sence.

That said, just like with Mass Effect and Assassins Creed, i worry that it won't be very good but those games ended up having pretty good MP so we'll see...
