What is Pixlbit? And an introduction.

Before my short intro, I want to ask a few questions about this website;

1) What is Pixlbit? Is this a gamer community launched website, or is it an aspiring competitor to mainstream videogame sources?

2) There certainly seems a lot of staff here; are writers and contributors paid, or is this, again, community-based?

3) Does Pixlbit have access to games and previews such as IGN or Gamespot before release/public domain?

4) Who thought of the cosmetic design here? Because I f-ing love it!

As for me, I've just begun trying out writing about videogames (about 7 months ago), and have mostly just begun to settle in at 1up.com. That said, I find it is rather easy to be buried by the already-established community/cliques that are present there, and what I am really looking for is a gaming community to recieve critiques and opinions from (as well as offer back equally). As an aspiring, serious fiction writer for the last seven years (but with only one short story published sinceFrown), I really am just interested in any and all types of writing-based discussion, be it in a comments section or general debate. What made me make a Pixlbit account is that I really see a sincere, authentic voice in the various staff and editors here, and as an all-too infant video game writer, see a lot for me to aspire toward in you guys. In particular, I've really chowed down on Jesse Miller's blogs over at 1up since joining, and him migrating/working here definitely has my curiosity piqued as to where Pixlbit is currently, and where it may go in the future.

Either way, Pixlbit's phenomenal maroon grid background has thoroughly established my dedication to coming here, and so I am going to bring over a few of my blogs from 1up, as well as a fresh one just finished earlier tonight (The Retro Renaissance). Again, I don't really know what Pixlbit is per-se, but whatever it is, it certainly seems to be on a solid, unique, and really satisfying path.

What is PixlBit? Such a loaded question, but I'm glad to answer. Before I get into answering each of your questions, let me first direct you to the retrospective I wrote about three-quarters of a year ago.

Since then we've come a long way and things have changed once again. Jesse Miller, who has been a long time friend of review writer, Stanton Daries joined the site, bringing with him an avid fan base, as well as a number of other great writers. Our numbers began rising once again, and since then we've been pushing for greater exposure around the internet.

As such, I think we're slowly migrating from enthusiast to a business-minded site with aspirations of something greater. That's not to say that we aren't still concerned about our community - that's our bread and butter. Truthfully, the only reason these blogs exist is because the community asked for them - same goes with the ability to reply to comments.

Now, to answer your questions:

1). This is a gamer launched website and a gamer run website - as of today we all do this for the love of it. We're also aspiring for greater though and I know I speak for the group when I say that we'd love to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the biggest sites out there. Unlike those sites, everyone here understands the value of our readers and we're very concerned about your thoughts and feelings - we will take point on your suggestions to improve the site.

2). As implied in the last answer - we're all unpaid (including me). We make a small pittance on ads right now and trust me, it's nowhere near enough to keep the site running.

3). We don't always get games early, but occasionally we are lucky enough to get them ahead of release. We're expecting this to change soon, but we won't know until it happens.

4). Credit for the design goes to Vic Roman. He donated the design to the site ahead of actually coming on as our Graphic Designer. We owe him a lot - the site looks so much better than it ever has before. Stay tuned because we have a slightly updated template dropping soon, which should look even better!

Hope that answers some of your questions, but if you have more, lay them on me, I'm glad to answer them. Also glad to hear you're digging the site, hearing stuff like that makes it all worthwhile!

Glad to have you AlmostAutumn, welcome! Your blogs over at 1UP are great and I love the way you think and put your thoughts together in your writing. You're much smarter than the average bear (yogi bear cartoon references aren't out of style are they?) lol.

The people here are great and I've been getting to know everybody through their blogs, features, reviews, previews, podcasts, discussions in comments, etc. The aesthetics have been changing from time to time, features have been getting added, and it's only getting better each time. I've been growing terribly fond of everybody since I got here and became part of the community (I'm beating around the bush like a child. I kind of love you guys and this place and want to see it succeed in every way). I knew Julian and Jesse from back at 1UP, and when they started working here at Pixlbit I'm one of the ones that came on over.

Nick's welcome message to you was quite similar to the one I got from him back when I started leaving comments. Honest and welcoming. Nick is a great leader here, him and Chessa are the real deal and they've been adding great components and people to the site. Thanks Nick.

I love video games with a passion and everytime I come sign in here at Pixlbit and start lurking around, I know I'm in good company and with people who love video games as well.

What Travis said, we love you too Mike! You're a huge asset to the site and even though you typically write long posts, I read every one of them. I think you have a lot of interesting things to share and I love seeing feedback like that on the site. Like I said, it's all this kind of stuff that makes what we do totally worth it. Keep up the good work!

"What is PixlBit?" is a question that has an obvious answer: "a gaming website." Of course, I realize that the question was meant to imply something more like "What sets PixlBit apart from any other gaming website?" This one can't be answered so easily.

Myself, I've been here since pretty much the beginning. I came here because I think the site has a unique voice, and though it has changed over time, I still feel that this place cuts out most of the nonsense you find on the big websites. There have been some growing pains, and there are some things I hope the site improves, but there's still a lot of great content here and I've rarely seen people elsewhere with this kind of dedication.

So, what is PixlBit, exactly? If you come here for the site's unbiased views presented in reviews, PixlBit is a review site. If you come here for the unique opinions shown in the occasional editorial or special, PixlBit is a journalist site. If you come here for the weekly podcasts, PixlBit is a talk site. Or maybe you come here just for the feaures like MIA, where PixlBit is a retro site. If you come here for everything, even better.

PixlBit is what you make of it.
