Splitting Down The Middle – Mario Mania #5

Good-bye 2-D platforming, hello 3-D polygons and analogue sticks.

Friends and Foes in 64-Bits

Amp

Roto-Disc’s replacement is a black electrified ball with a scary looking face. In Mario 64 it will spin around certain places to be an annoyance.

Big Bob-Omb/Bob-Omb King

The very first boss of the game and the most easy to beat. Just run behind him, grab him and then throw him. In the DS version, he is fought two different times with different methods of defeating him.

Bully & Big Bully

Bullies show up in Lethal Lava Land and try to bump you into lava.

Fwoosh

Clouds in the Mario series were originally innocent background objects with happy faces. Apparently they got sick and tired of staying in the background, because now they will try to blow you off the sides of cliffs to your doom.

Klepto

A cartoony looking vulture that flies around Shifting Sand Land (and in the DS port, a secret tropical looking area) and sometimes carries something depending on the stage. It will steal your cap if you are not careful.

Money Bag

A hopping green bag with yellow eyes that holds a lot of coins. Upon defeat, its contents will disperse for your collection.

Scuttlebug

This spider-like enemy, with suction-cup feet in newer Mario games, didn’t offer up much of a threat aside from crawling all over the place.

Skeeter

Found mostly in Wet-Dry Land, the Skeeter is a bug that glides along the surface of water.

Tox Box

In one part of Shifting Sand Land, correct positioning will keep you from being crushed by Tox Boxes with a painted face. While it saw a Thwomp-like redesign in the Galaxy series, Tox Box makes some exploration tense.

Ukkiki

This annoying cap-stealing monkey is only encountered in Tall Tall Mountain.

Unagi

An eel you cannot hurt but scared little children. Yes, you were scared, and I know it. Only encountered in Jolly Roger Bay.

Whomp

Mario 64’s most iconic new enemy is a living stone slab that tries to crush you when you got close to it. Mostly encountered in Whomp’s Fortress.

Whomp King

He won’t gravel-er… grovel after you pound on him three times. He is the boss of Whomp’s Fortress.

Bob-Omb Buddy

The newest NPC to the series is the pink colored Bob-Omb Buddies. They unlocked the use of cannons in each of the fifteen worlds; in the DS version they showed you where red coins were located on the touch screen map.

Dorrie

The other NPC is a Loch Ness Monster sea creature that resides in Hazy Maze Cave’s underground lake. Mario rides on is head to a door and a course star.

You are not going to see a lot of new enemies return to the Mario series proper after this game. While they are very unique, they didn’t leave much of an impression on me.
