Digital Mystery Tour Episode 13: Round 3...FIGHT!

Digital Mystery Tour's Month of Battle continues!

For my contribution to Battle Month, I decided to focus on some of the more obscure stuff out there. There's music from portable games, RPG's and even some retro stuff. Check it out!

I do have a couple of things I want to let you know about; First, my headset is still messy from when Shodan broke it during Backloggers Anonymous: System Shock 2. I was able to soldier on, but after 4 attempts to record one section, I was forced to leave in some microphone popping. I'm very sorry about this, but I do have a replacement already on it's way, so hopefully this will be the last time you have to deal with it.

Second, I tried to explain how the last 4 musical tracks work as best I could in the podcast, but if you need more, here's a video of a random encounter from Resonance of Fate / End of Eternity. Notice how the music switches back and forth between the heavier, more complex stuff and the simpler, low quality sounding music (yes, the low fidelity sound is intentional. I own the game. I thought it was a nice touch.) Anyway, check it out!

This week's music

00:06 Radiant Historia: The Edge of Green - Yoko Shimomura.

03:55 Code of Princess: Holy Princess (Solange’s theme) ACE.

07:33 Bravely Default Flying Fairy: Bell of Battle - Revo.

11:07 Koudelka: Waterfall - Hiroki Kikuta.

16:55 Etrian Odyssey III: Battlefield: The First Campaign - Yuzo Koshiro.

21:54 Etrian Odyssey III: Battlefield: Those That Slay and Fall -  Yuzo Koshiro.

The Etrian Odyssey tracks are amazing.  It makes me regret not playing any of them yet.

The games aren't for everybody, that's for sure, but as far as the music goes, it's always amazing. That's Yuzo Koshiro for you.

I will definitely look up some more of his music. While I have not played any of the Etrian Odyssey games yet, I do hope to pick up the remake of the original.

Whoa, great choices! When Julian put out that request for community suggestions (which is the next podcast, I guess) The Edge of Green from Radiant Historia is what I suggested, so I'm very happy to see you include it here. That soundtrack is so great. It was the first time in a long time that I stopped playing a game to just sit there and listen to the music. But I also loved that piece from Code of Princess. I haven't played it yet but I hope to, especially if it's got great music like that. And though I haven't played any of the Etrian Odyssey games, I do love Yuzo Koshiro's work, especially EOIII. I was surprised though by how much I enjoyed the remixed version. Koshiro really took his source and ran with it. So much sax! lol

The song from Nier reminded me of some of the work of Paul Schwartz taking classical or operatic pieces and giving them just a bit of a more modern spin, particularly of "Farewell," which is reworked from an opera (not sure which one). The only video I could find of it has someone's pictures from a trip to Portugal, so don't mind that. It's just a vehicle for the music Smile
