Nerds Without Pants Episode 90: Tasty Board Game Buffet

Lance from Tasty Minstrel Games drops some mad knowledge!

Welcome to a very different edition of Nerds Without Pants! This time we are joined by Lance from Tasty Minstrel Games. You may know him as Undead Viking on YouTube, and he's here to educate us on some board games. Before that though, we talk some video games!

We kick things off with some Game of Thrones talk (no spoilers!), and discover that Julian is done with the series. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is so Japanese that Julian's girlfriend can't handle it, and Angelo and Julian spend some time giving Lance some video game recommendations.

After that, we go deep, and we mean DEEP into board games. Angelo and Lance get into a bunch of different titles, and Lance gives some interesting insight into the board game industry. Julian can just sit and listen because he doesn't have friends to play games with, but hopefully you all find some things to try out at home!

We wrap things up by talking about Yokohama, the new game being published on Kickstarter. You still have a little bit of time to donate as of this recording, and you'll want to do that if you want the fancy deluxe edition! We hope you like this departure from our normal format, and we'll be Chrono Crossing to 2011 next episode, we promise!

FEATURED MUSIC:

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE- Reincarnation

Game of Thrones theme

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest- Battle Theme

Emerald Rose- Never Split the Party

The Double Clicks- Table Top Games

My 2010 pick would be probably Fable III. The battle system was pretty good, the writing was great (Stephen Fry's voice for the win), and I'll never forget getting the Henry VIII achievement and watching my last wife (actually husband since I played a woman in this game) go head over heals into a hot spring after I clubbed him to death with my giant hammer. Good times.

Whoops. 2011 is Gears of War 3 for me. I resisted the Gears for it's tough guy image but I finally tried 1 and 2 over that summer and realized what I'd missed. Gears 3 was even better and I got hooked on Hoard mode, playing until I unlocked missels for that mech thing.

Great cast guys - Kinda jealous I wasn't on this one! Really enjoyed the board game talk and I pledged to the Yokohama Kickstarter before I even listened to this one. TMG does some of the best Deluxified games.

Is there still time for the 2011 Chrono Crossimg pick? Mine is Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I love cyberpunk stuff and I think the story and player augments are done really well. I like playing stealthily but I'm not very good at it, so it's nice to have the option of blowing things up if I'm spotted. Can't wait for Mankind Divided next month!

Also--for Lance--I've never played the Star Realms app but my wife and I love playing the physical card game. So there's one person lol.

This was an awesome episode.  I just hate that I really want to spend a crap-ton of money on board games now.

and holy crap that TMG website sucks.  I can't wait for the update.

And I have had the Yokohama kickstarter open all day so far, and am so close to backing it.

It is pretty bad, but honestly just go to Board Game Geek. The community there is pretty much on top of everything you could be curious about.

I ended up backing Yokohama and am definitely excited for it.

The other game that sounded amazing was Ponzi Scheme, I am going to have to see where I can find that one.

Ponzi Scheme isn't out here quite yet in the states, but you can pre-order it on sites like Miniaturemarket.com.

Thanks for the board game discussion. I'm adding board games to my list to play. Been meaning to do that for a while now.
