Nerds Without Pants Special: Little Gaming Buyer's Guide

Sometimes, Julian plays games that he never talks about. Here's some now!

Welcome to one of the specials we have planned during our annual hiatus! It's just not the special we had planned to release first, but we'll cross that bridge later. Join Julian as he does a solo show about some of the smaller game's he's played recently. Maybe you'll hear about something you never heard about before, or maybe you'll come away from this episode with some new games you want to try. Or, you'll just roll your eyes because Julian doesn't like Celeste. Either way, enjoy this bite-sized special edition of Nerds Without Pants, and keep an eye out for our big music special!

I'll have to skip whatever you have to say about LiS2 because I STILL (caps cause I'm mad at myself) owe Nick a video review and don't want my opinion influenced by any outside sources.

Celeste I'll skip cause I just bought it. I'm interested in this Oxenfree talk though.

And I remember you talking about Night in the Woods last year.

I don’t think I really talked about the game. I remember saying that Mae was my video game spirit animal because we’re both shitty people, but loyal to our friends.

Finally listened to this and not sure why I didn't before, cause you didn't spoil anything. Pretty good takes as far as the ones here I've actually played. I'm still looking forward to the narrative of Celeste, though I understand where you're coming from on it not being a super-new experience.

My question is how you live in Texas and don't like Mexican food. When people don't like Whataburger I get it, cause it's greasy and heavy and still fast food (I still love it), but ... do you mean like all Mexican food? That's nuts.

EarthBound Review Rewind

Remember that silly old trope in teen movies where the nerdy “plain Jane” character magically becomes super attractive just by removing her glasses? It was a bit like that with EarthBound- an RPG that was largely ignored when released on the Super NES in its twilight years. Nintendo’s ill-conceived ad campaign telling the player that “this game stinks” didn’t do it any favors either. The game’s overtly humorous kid-friendly facade was unusual for its time and quickly written off as ugly and boring by all but the most accepting of RPG fans. But thanks to the positive praise in gaming forums years later, it picked up steam and eventually became lauded as one of the best on the Super NES. Much like the bespectacled character in every 90s teen comedy, it was as if EarthBound removed its glasses. Nothing was different about it- just our perception of what was already there.
