The Simpsons Arcade Game Coming Back?

At last, this classic game gets re-released. Woo-hoo! But we don't know where it's going to land. D'oh!

Konami created some very memorable arcade games based on licensed properties in the late 80s and early 90s. The two highest-profile games have seen releases on XBLA and PSN, namely Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game and X-Men: The Arcade game. But there’s been one Konami arcade release that people have been clamoring for, and it looks like the wait may be almost over. Yes friends, there is evidence that The Simpsons Arcade Game will be coming to a game machine near you.

The information comes from the Australian Classification board, which rates The Simpsons Arcade Game as PG for mild violence. The game is listed as multiplatform, so we can’t comment on exactly where this blast from the past will end up. X-Men was released for XBLA and PSN, but TMNT came out for XBLA only, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

If you missed it the first time around, The Simpsons Arcade Game was a 4-player beat ‘em up that featured Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa as characters. The game had large sprites, voice acting from the original cast, and the Simpsons could team up for special moves. It was very similar in structure to the TMNT game.

The listing also names the developer for this port as Backbone Entertainment. They are no strangers to arcade ports, having worked on many games for Capcom, including Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo HD and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

It made me sad to see that one of the Seasons of the Simpsons used the game's sprite art in promoting it, just because I thought I'd never legally be able to play the game again.

This is practically a day-one purchase for me.

Same here. I still love beat 'em ups, and I don't mind if they have shallow gameplay. I still play Golden Axe, Streets of Rage 2, and TMNT whenever the mood strikes me.
