Game Informer Reveals South Park: The Game

A full scale RPG from THQ and Obsidian is on the way.

South Park has had a storied history in gaming. Back on the N64, PlayStation, and PC, Iguana Entertainment brought fans a first person shooter that carried some of the charm that made the show a hit. Later, it was followed by a racing game, South Park Rally, and a trivia game, Chef's Luv Shack. After that, the IP went dormant until Let's Go Tower Defense Play on XBLA, which is still to be followed by a four player, co-op platformer. While these small downloadable games are making a splash with players, they pale in comparison to what THQ and Obsidian have announced to be bringing to the market.

South Park: The Game is going to be a full scale RPG developed by Fallout: New Vegas creators, Obsidian Entertainment. The game's script is being written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who are also overseeing development and voicing the many characters of the game. As the new kid in town, you will have to make friends and defend the town against a number of incoming threats.

The game is slated to release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012, but those interested in learning more will have to wait for the latest issue of Game Informer for the full scoop.

This could be cool, but Obsidian seems to get these licensed properties and they don't go anywhere. I know they are supposed to be working on a Wheel of Time RPG, and I think they have one or two other projects in the wings. That's a lot for a smaller developer.

Being that it's on the cover of Game Informer, I'm guessing that it's been in development for a while and will be here sooner than later. I'm kind of interested to see what will be done with this beloved franchise.

I think there's room for some really cool stuff with the South Park franchise in an RPG. People are tearing it apart on Twitter, but I know that Trey and Matt are big gamers, and South Park has tons of stuff that would work in an RPG. The recent Coon and Friends 3 parter alone is pretty epic.

boy Phil Kollar wasn't joking when he wrote about people being shocked at the GI cover for dec/jan...I certainly was. I don't think I've EVER played a South Park game other than the abysmal shooter that made its way onto N64 (I think it was N64...??). This game's gonna be interesting to say the least. There are so many fans of the show that the video game has to be top-notch, or it'll be universally reviled.

Yeah, I kind of laughed when I first heard about this, but if they've got the people who Fallout making it? That actually sounds kinda cool.
