Epic Games President Scared to Unveil New Title

Brand-new franchise is "radically different."

As we head into 2012, it’s time to start looking forward to what’s next in the realm of video games. If you’re at all interested in what’s coming down the pipeline, you’ll probably want to set your DVR for the Spike TV VGAs this Saturday. The awards ceremony leaves much to be desired for many enthusiasts, but the show will give us our first look at a ton of games, including the next game from Epic. But why would the President of Epic Games, Mike Capps, be scared about unveiling this all-new IP?

“It's something radically different for us. New IP, new game,” said Capps in an interview with Games Industry. “We love Gears, it was a great trilogy, we've gotten a lot of great compliments and a lot of great fans, and we're still supporting Gears 3 very strongly, but I've got guys that have been on it since 2001, and some of them need a break and to try something new.”

But what could that “something new” be? Capps isn’t going into detail yet. He confirmed that the company isn’t developing a game for the Vita, and says that releasing a launch game just isn’t a good idea for them. He says that Epic is working on a few different projects, but the game that is going to debut at the VGAs is something that he pushed for, and even wrote some of the script in the trailer. “I'm so scared that people will just say "oh yeah, that looks like an Epic game, oh sure" because I want them to see it as a departure, but I don't want anyone to say "that doesn't look anything like an Epic game, forget it, I'm not interested,”” he continues. “So we're actually nervous, we haven't been nervous like this for a while!”

Earlier this year at the Games Developer Conference, Epic Games showed off footage of their next iteration of the Unreal Engine. While the company didn’t come right out and say that this was running on an entirely new engine, the presentation definitely looked like next-gen graphics. The demo, titled “Samaritan”, could be a hint at what’s to come from Epic. They have been known to integrate elements from their tech demos into their actual games. The Brumak and one of the Locust grunts can be found in their 2004 Unreal Engine 3 demo, for example.

We’ll have info and impressions on Epic’s new game after the trailer goes live at the VGAs.

RPG maybe? That would be something very different from them.

Now that would be something! The Samaritan demo looks like a new approach for Epic, as well. It says noir-style character action game to me. I'm really curious to see what it is.
