Skyrim Ships 10 Million Copies

The Bethesda RPG has shattered Steam sales records.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been the talk of the gaming world since it was released. It has spawned tons of discussion in various forums, Twitter feeds, and even has its own meme. It came very close to taking the top spot in PixlBit’s Game of the Year awards, and ended up tying with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Runner Up award. Yes, Skyrim has earned a lot of accolades, and it seems like that hasn’t been lost on the gaming public at large. In a press release from Bethesda, Skyrim has now shipped 10 million copies worldwide.

Considering that Skyrim is a pretty hardcore RPG, those numbers are huge. According to Bethesda, the game has brought in over $650 million dollars in sales since its release on November 11. As a point of reference, Modern Warfare 3 (the biggest franchise in gaming today) pulled in $775 million in its first 5 days.

Steam sales figures are a closely guarded secret, and never factor into the NPD charts, but we have a little bit of a window into that world today. “Skyrim is the fastest selling title in Steam's history,” says Valve Director of Business Development Jason Holtman. "We are delighted that Bethesda chose to use Steamworks to support Skyrim both at retail and digitally.” Bethesda will soon be rolling out tools to make user generated content for Skyrim that will work directly with Steam.
