Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Gets New Content

September is when you can get your hands on this improved PC classic.

Many fans of BioWare became such because of games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Mass Effect. But there was a time when the RPG developer was known as a PC company, working on huge hits such as Baldur’s Gate. That game is still highly respected by PC gamers, but for many younger players or people who cut their teeth on consoles the game has been difficult to play on modern systems. We’ve already reported about Overhaul and their project to bring Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition to PC, Mac, and tablet devices, but we have some juicy new information about the upgraded game.

The PC version of the game is due out September 18th for 19.99. You can pre-order the game from the official website for two dollars off, a special forum badge, and the ability to pre-load the game so it’s ready to go as soon as it launches. The Mac version will retail for the same price, and is also due in September, though a firm date for this version is not announced as of yet.

Overhaul is adding a ton of new content to Baldur’s Gate Enhanced. The most substantial element added is the new stand-alone adventure titled The Black Pits. This 6 hour adventure takes place in the area known as Underdark, and features 15 challenging battles. It boasts full control of a six character party, and difficult, unique battles.

Also new to the game—and included in the PC and Mac versions— are three new NPC party members. Rasaad yn Bashir is a Calishite Monk on a quest of self-enlightenment. Neera is a half-elf Wild Mage on the run from the Red Wizards. Lastly, Dorn Il-Khan is a half-orc Blackguard who walks a much darker path. These characters all add new content and quests to an already feature-packed game.

The game is also coming to iPad and Android tablets, at a reduced price of 9.99. The game includes all of the enhancements as well as The Black Pits, but only Rasaad is available for free. If you want Neera or Dorn you’ll have to pony up some extra cash for an in-app purchase. The iPad version of the game is also expected in September, with the Android version to be announced later.

In addition to all of this, Enhanced Edition features over 400 fixes to the original Baldur’s Gate sourcecode, all of the mechanical additions that Baldur’s Gate 2 brought to the table, and even cross-platform multiplayer. It sounds like a huge amount of game for people that missed out on it the first time around.

I definitely should play this. My PC gaming plans get more extensive with time. Once I get either a tower or laptop that's great for gaming, I'm going to add this to the list of things I need to check out. Daunting list though already. Includes, Starcraft 2, Diablo III, The Witness, mods on Steam, and plenty of other things. Oh yea, and I need to start building games. Need to get me a nice PC already.
