New Ni No Kuni Media and Details

TGS goers get hands-on time with the title as well as a sneak peek at some new screenshots.

The Another World, better known as Ni no Kuni, is an upcoming RPG currently in development by Professor Layton developers, Level-5. Also aiding them in the process is the anime company Studio Ghibli, who many anime fans will know for their work on animating films directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away).

The plot for Ni no Kuni follows the story of thirteen year old Oliver, who loses his mother very suddenly. Following his mother’s death, Oliver discovers that a doll his mother had given him is actually a fairy named Shikuzu, who in turn gives Oliver a magical book that allows him to enter a parallel world. In this world named Ninokuni, the fairy explains to Oliver that he will find a way to revive his deceased mother.

Currently, Ni no Kuni has only been officially announced for release on the DS, although there is speculation that it will also be released for another platform, which Joystiq presumes is Level-5’s mobile service, ROID. This year’s Tokyo Game Show provided gamers with new insight into the game, including a tentative release date of Spring 2010 for Japan.

Reports from TGS, indicate that attendees are excited for the game praising the beauty of the cutscenes and art found within Ni no Kuni. See below for a preview of what the game has to offer.

It should be noted that the ROID version, or at least part of it, bears a very striking resemblance to Earthbound, with characters and the overworld a clear homage. The question is whether or not it's just a world you visit or if it's the entire game.

This game is one I hope makes it to North America, I can definitely say that.
