Nintendo to Drop Prices of DSi and DSi XL

A surprise announcement reveals a moderate set of price drops on September 12.

Interestingly enough, Nintendo's price drop corresponds with the release of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.

The DSi and the DSi XL will have their prices reduced to 149.99 and 169.99, respectively, on Sunday, September 12th.

Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway provides a reason for the price drop: “We know shoppers want to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Our new Nintendo DSi prices make it easier than ever for consumers to access the tremendous variety of games, applications and social tools on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems.”

It's disappointing to see that the originally DS Lite isn't also getting a price drop. The handheld has been priced at $129.99 for quite some time, now. Maybe even since its launch.

Still, I like the move of a simultaneous price drop with Professor Layton. At E3, Nintendo put an enhanced focus on Professor Layton, having representatives with DSi XLs attached stand in the 3DS line, allowing demos of the software.

I do wonder, though, if Nintendo is clearing out all their big news to prepare for the announcement of the 3DS. It's not that I know anything about that, believe me, I don't, but I'm hoping this is the case.

The DS Lite launched at $150.

I think that this pretty much confirms the 3DS will be $190 or $200. That's higher than I was hoping for, but oh well.
