Kirby's Return to Dream Land Preview

This Kirby title brings fans of the series back to its roots with a new story and cooperative multiplayer.

While we didn't hear anything about it during today's Nintendo Press Conference, a brand new Kirby title, Kirby Wii (Working Title), is coming to the Wii this Fall.

Last year, gamers were treated to the first true mainline Kirby title in many, many years, Kirby's Epic Yarn. The game was well received amongst gamers and critics alike, and ignited a desire for more games starring the pudgy pink protagonist.

The storyline of Kirby Wii begins when an alien spaceship crashes into the peaceful land of Pop Star and its pieces are shattered and scattered around the realm. In order to help the aliens return back to their home, Kirby must track down all of the broken ship parts.

For Kirby's newest adventure, Nintendo strayed from the Epic Yarn formula in favor of creating an experience more reminiscent of the classic NES title, Kirby's Dream Land. The art style is similar, and Kirby's famous copy ability has returned, but the gameplay is drastically different from both the NES title and Kirby's Epic Yarn.

While players could experience Kirby's Epic Yarn with another player if they so wished, Kirby Wii will allow players to tackle the gameplay with up to three other additional people with drop in/drop out multiplayer. First player will control Kirby and the other three will have the option to choose between King Dedede, MetaKnight, and Waddle Dee.

What specific abilities each of the additional characters will posses (if they have any at all) has yet to be discussed, however screenshots of the title hint that the characters will simply attack in a unique manner. From the looks of it, Waddle Dee attacks with his hands, King Dedede will use his signature hammer, and Meta Knight will be yielding his sword. As previously stated, we know for a fact that Kirby's copy move will return, and with it his ability to suck in enemies, spit them out, and (of course) copy an enemies ability.

Kirby Wii will introduce several new moves acquired through copying never seen before in any other Kirby title to date. One such ability is called Whip, and Kirby will don a cowboy hat and lasso enemies. Another is Leaf, which will cause a whirlwind of leaves to form around Kirby.

In addition to standard Kirby abilities, Kirby Wii will introduce Super Abilities, which are only activated when Kirby inhales very specific enemies. One example of these Super Abilities is the "Super Sword", which will give Kirby the ability to yield a gigantic sword that will eliminate all enemies on-screen.

Kirby Wii has yet to be rated by the ESRB, but is expected to release this Fall.

I hope it will be as fun as Kirby's Epic Yarn was for me.
