Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Hands On Preview

Ratchet's latest adventure looks to be fun FOUR everybody!

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One brings co-op multiplayer to the beloved Sony franchise for the first time. Many fans were wary of how well it would work, since the series has been firmly rooted in single player action platforming. I can safely assure everyone that the game works extremely well and is a lot of fun, especially with multiple players.

In the demo, a few other E3 attendees took the roles of Ratchet and Clank, while I controlled Captian Quark. Here we were thrown into the action. Weapon changing is now handled with the right stick, which I found to be an interesting, but necessary departure for the type of game All 4 One is. Weapons are definitely a major part of the Ratchet series, and this game is no exception. Flamethrowers, Freeze Guns, Rocket Launchers, and Shield Generators are just some of the different types of weapons in the game, and they work fine, for the most part. A few of the weapons didn't seem to work properly, particularly this buzz saw type weapon. Overall, the weapons look and feel cool to use.

The focus of this game is definitely combat. Players have to team up in different ways if they want to be successful at this game. One example is with the vacuum launcher, a weapon that sucks in allies, and can shoot them back out. This weapon was mostly used to help players get across gaps, in conjunction with a tether that is activated by pressing triangle. Other co-op perks include bonuses for using the same weapon, or shooting at the same enemy. It's very obvious that team work and coordination are key matters of the game.

The experience was enjoyable and seemed to have successfully integrated chaotic co-op play into the Ratchet series. In the demo there was no drop in, drop out feature, so I hope in the future that it is added in. Look forward to hearing more about this game as as its fall release approaches.
