Interesting experiment. That means we'll get unfiltered coverage as time goes along?

The AAA Problem

Posted on 02/10/2012 at 12:38 AM | Filed Under Feature

The industry has a bad spending habit that needs to be curbed. Its been shown that hardcore gamers can't fund the HD beast. $60 per title, means that most working stiffs can only get one, getting more would mean not paying the rent, putting food on the table, etc.

On the retail side, games should be priced accordingly. Rayman Origins? Should've been 29.99 from the get go. That would make more of an impulse buy and stocking stuffer. On the 3DS, Something like Cave Story should have gone initially for 19.99 considering there are a myriad of ways to play this title.

By keeping costs down, and pricing games accordingly, we all win.

Activision Blizzard Investor's Call Wrap Up

June would make a fitting release date. Diablo 2 came out late June back in 2000. Dirty dozen years. But if they release it sooner, I don't think anyone will complain...

Eat Sleep Play Lays Off 20% of Staff, Jaffe Exits

Did they say these employees were full time or contract?

Still, its 'heavy' that Mr.Jaffe left the building. He tends to run his mouth, but his heart is in the right place. Whatever he's got cooking, We'll be the first to know =)...

The Lost Quest of Star Fox

Posted on 02/08/2012 at 12:19 AM | Filed Under Feature

IIRC, when Star Fox Assault was being developed, IGN asked a question if they would include this title as a pre-order incentive. Miyamoto said he would consider it, but instead Xevious was included instead.

Maybe re-make this for the 3DS eShop? They can bump up the visuals and sound to make a thrilling experience. We have the technology, We have the experience. We can make it better...

UMD Passport Won't Be Available to US Vita Owners

Oldest example I can think of is the Atari 7800 able to play Atari 2600 games....

Wow. Just wow. The incompetence borders on legendary. "We'd like to reward our loyal PSP customers who stuck it out with us. Those that responded to 'step your game up.' We do apologize for that annoying kid in the ads, you guys were real troopers. We'd like to reward you by giving you the option to download the PSP games you love and own...at full price."

Don't want to come off as fanboyish, but my the first  game for the 3DS was Final Fantasy III for 9.99 at the 'Stop. I was one of the suckers early adopters, I broke the bank on that purchase, even after trading my DS lite to knock off the price a little. Super Street Fighter IV had to wait for another 2 weeks...

I can't imagine 3DS with DS/DSi Ware support. Its a smart move since while the DS hardware is  all but retired, the software will get a small boost for savvy 3DS owners like myself who can hunt down great DS titles for a bargain.

Still want to try out Wipeout though =p

Final Fantasy X HD a Remaster, Not a Remake

Posted on 02/07/2012 at 12:18 AM | Filed Under News

I admit: I haven't played this one yet. =(

So what other factors would it take to make it a re-make (no rhyme intended..)? Dual audio (for those who want to listen to the original Japanese dub)? Online content?

Eternal Champions

Posted on 02/04/2012 at 12:06 AM | Filed Under Feature

aww man, Eternal Champions. That was my jam....

I'd main RAX, the cybernetic kickboxer (Jet Knee FTW), and Xavier, the alchemist wizard.

I remember the print ad tagline: "To prepare for Eternal Champions, use Street Fighter II as your training wheels." Ouch.

Sega could have easily phoned this in, but they took special care of this baby. I'd say its similiar to how Samurai Shodown did its own thing with weapons based combat, but was still a quality fighting game.

As far as bringing it back, this would be another title on the list of Sega ressurections. Panzer Dragoon, Toe Jam and Earl, Streets of Rage, and of course, one more Shenmue.

In a sea of me-too, shameless rip-offs of that era, Sega and Nintendo with their Killer Instinct titles were surprisingly good. You could say they were c-c-c-c-ombor breakers!

Sony Hemorrhaging Money in 2011

Posted on 02/03/2012 at 01:32 AM | Filed Under News

IIRC, it was the majority of the movie studios who decided to back bluray, ensuring a short format wars, which is good, since the consumer would wind up the real loser. Imagine those people who have HD-DVDs....

Even that victory is blunted due to the fact the rise of digital distribution, Nextflix, etc.

Sony has to pick it up somewhere, maybe that's why they put Kaz at the helm. I remember Sony being the name in portable music. In the 80s, it was the Walkman. Like Kleenex, even if you didn't have Sony brand, that portable cassette player was called a Walkman. In the 90s it was the Discman. I remember back in high school, you had a Discman, you were pimp. Anti Skip FTW.

But with the 00s, they missed the boat with digital music.  While the Rio music players were the first MP3 players on the market, it was a resurging Apple with the one two combination of the iPod and iTunes that got the lions share in a few years. I'm sure Sony is still kicking themselves with that one.

THQ Layoffs Total 175 Employees

Posted on 02/02/2012 at 12:22 AM | Filed Under News

"Speaking of investors, I'm surprised they're not revolting, calling for a change of management, new board of directors and the like."

Ask, and ye shall receive.

I'm not up on the whole story, save for the open letter a disgruntled ex-employee circulated around various news sites a few weeks ago, but it sounds like they gotta sack more top dogs. When your stock drops to under a buck from 30 or so, someone is asleep at the wheel.
