Wii Online Service Funeral Pyre

Embrace the flames!

To help you cope with the encroaching demise of online Wii gaming, your PixlBit family is here to help you send the service off to its eternal existence before it all ends on May 20th. What better game to do this with than one of the few that had a significant online community:  Mario Kart Wii. Join us on Thursday, May 15th starting at 9:00 p.m. EDT to play Mario Kart races until we puke blue shells. If all goes according to plan, we’ll also record the event so you can see how it played out from at least one other person’s perspective. To get in on the fun, just post your Mario Kart code in the comments and we’ll add it to a big list for everyone to tediously enter into their Wiis.

Farewell to the Wii: Surviving with Just a Wii: The 3 Stages of a Console Cycle

It begins again...

I have always been a one-console guy. The cost of a second console has never been something I could justify, and I certainly was not going to afford Sony and Microsoft's High Definition money-vacuuming machines. With Twilight Princess looking pretty nice and the motion controls showing a lot of potential for interesting new gameplay ideas, getting a Wii in 2006 was a no-brainer.

Farewell to the Wii: Unsung Wii Games

Come see all the games you probably missed, but should've played (shame on you).

Unsung Wii games… where do you even start? Just about everything that came out on the Wii that wasn’t a major blockbuster went relatively unnoticed. Having written for a Nintendo-only site for a number of years, I had a unique opportunity to play many games that were off the radar for most Wii owners.

Farewell to the Wii: Returning to Nintendo

Welcome Home.

I was a Nintendo fanboy as a kid, but then again, what child of the 80’s wasn’t? I obsessed over the secrets of Mario’s games, fought against the forces of evil with Mega Man, and had my first addicting RPG experience with the original Final Fantasy. I devoured each issue of Nintendo Power when it arrived at my house, and had a complete freak out when we got a Super Nintendo for Christmas one year. I fought with my cousin (who probably couldn’t care less) about why the SNES was superior to his Genesis, and had my mind blown by games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy III, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Donkey Kong Country.

Farewell to the Wii: The Channels

A unique user interface that stood the test of time and provided some fresh ideas about content on a game console.

Now that we’re just waiting around for our Wii U pre-orders to be fulfilled, we’ve started thinking back on our Wii experience. There were great games and there were stupid, gimmicky games.  There was the much maligned 480p output and the long wait for external storage.  There were also the channels.

Farewell to the Wii: Memories of the Launch

The PixlBit staff shares their Wii launch day memories.

Even though there’s still plenty of excitement revolving around the launch of a new console, be it handheld or otherwise, it seems as though the days of week-long lines and potential riots have been all but killed off by the widespread use of pre-orders.  Those launch line ups were quite the experience, but those early days were made even more memorable when the new hardware was unsealed and powered up for the first time.  When the Wii Launched on November 19, 2006, nobody predicted it would be snapped up just as soon as it could be stocked on store shelves.  We also weren’t sure what direction the innovative motion controls and classic Nintendo franchises would take us.  To relive the elation and anticipation of the Wii Launch experience, some of the PixlBit crew thought it would be fun to share their own launch day memories.  If you have some of your own, be sure to share them in the comments.
