"Game of the Year"!? Part One

"...the video game equivalent of your first kiss."

Last year, a game was released that received universal praise up until launch.

The game won IGN's E3 2009 Game of the Show. GameSpot's E3 2009 Editors' Choice Awards' Game of the Show. The E3 Game Critics Awards' Best Original and Best Handheld game. The 10th Annual Game Designers' Conference Awards' Best Handheld game and Best Innovation.

GamePro said this game "...is the video game equivalent of your first kiss: it's awkward, it's sweet and it's utterly memorable."

Gameplanet raves this game "...is an example of what can be achieved when you put aside HD, Hollywood effects and cinematic cut scenes to concentrate on innovative gameplay instead. An instant classic, and new contender for Game of the Year."

Play Magazine Online exclaims the game "...is a game that will be remembered for a long time. It’s a genesis event. In the history of games, there are few moments where a new genre appears; few dates where something truly novel is given to gamers." This game "...is a birth. It’s Wolfenstein 3D. It’s Mario 64." This game "...is Street Fighter."

CVG calls it "Genius. Work of art. Crowning glory."

I could go on. For a long time. These snippets all lead reviews about the game. There's more, yes. I found these quotes atop reviews found via metacritic.com, and yes, they're all at least 11 points higher, on a scale of 100, than the average score for the game. Still, to praise a game as highly as this game was praised, it must be something great. It's got to be something revolutionary, right? If any game has a critic's pedigree, it would have to be this one, wouldn't it?

Tomorrow I'll post the first article in a series detailing where I believe the gaming media went wrong on one of 2009's most hyped titles, from describing my perspective of the game, to my prior experience with the developer, all the way to how the gaming media reacted. If you know the game I'm referring to, play nice, and keep it to yourself until I reveal it tomorrow. Be sure to come back check out my opinion, beginning tomorrow, and each day of the series, once you know mine, let us know yours!

I'll just say that this game is a contender for my biggest gaming disappointment of the decade. :(
