Metroid: The First Encounter

To wrap up the week and put a bow on the fine work of JD, some of the staff have contributed their first encounter with the series and some unique memories of their experiences.

Kyle's Memories

When I was 7, I underwent surgery to remove my tonsils. As far as I know those things usually just sit in the back of your throat and strengthen your immune system somehow, but in a small number of people, including me, they actually attract diseases.

Long story short, I had over a month off from school and the doctor's recommendation was that I sit around and eat lots of ice cream and popsicles. That's already exciting enough for a 7-year-old, but for me it was even better, 'cause I spent pretty much that whole month playing Super Metroid. It's a pretty hard game for a little kid, and I got stuck multiple times. Embarassingly, one of these times was immediately after getting the morph ball bomb upgrade. You kind of just have to use your brand new item on the only different-looking wall, but it stumped me for some reason. In the end it was my dad who suggested I try using the bombs on that wall. "Oh, come on, Dad, that's not going to wo--whoa! Awesome!"

My parents never really shared my interest in video games, so it was nice being able to have moments like that. In a small way, he was playing the game with me. We were also both freaked out by the end of the Crocomire fight (you know what I'm talking about). Now, so many years later, I'll still occasionally go back and play Super Metroid. Of course, now I can get from the beginning to the end in one sitting, but it still has a certain charm to it.
