Anybody else shocked by this news? What do you think - will this be a good thing or a bad thing?

I've gotten quite used to him in his fantastic right wing pundit character and I'm a bit afraid that he won't be able to feature such a witty role in a late night show. The format doesn't traditionally allow for it and I have to expect that the market who watches those shows expect something quite different from Colbert.

I do like how angry (or faux angry) the news has made Rush Limbaugh. He doesn't seem to understand Colbert's brand of humor. Colbert may more openly mock the staunch conservatives, but he's always poking fun at everyone.

Anyway, it should be interesting to see how this all turns out, even if I'm a bit hesitant of his new role.

I love Colbert but was very surprised by the news.  Not sure what to think about it.  I like his character on the Colbert Report, and assume that he'll mostly give it up in his new role.  I think he'll be good (he wasn't always playing the same character in the Daily Show but was still funny), but I'll miss his old show.

I do have to wonder about how succesfull he will be though.  There are plenty on the right who hate him and will never give him a chance.  But I don't think he really is as left-wing as he sometimes acts like he is, so I doubt he's going to fully bring that side over with his new job. And he really is an equal-opportunity offender.  I believe it was Nancy Pelosi who told her fellow democrats several years ago to quit going on his show because he was making them look like fools.

There's so many districts I need to know better though.

Now that Colbert has been doing the job for a while, what's everyone think?

Personally I can't say I've tuned in nearly as frequently as I once did with The Report, but I do think he's settled into the role fairly well and the show has gotten funnier over time. The first few weeks was painful at times and it seemed clear how hard it was for him to assume the new role. I am glad to see Stephen getting his due. He's an incredibly smart and funny guy who deserves all the success he's found.
