Akai Katana is the Next Cave Shooter to Invade

Max Payne has bullet time, and Diablo III has hell, but Akai Katana has bullet hell!

Who says the shoot ‘em up is dead? It seems like anytime someone proclaims the genre to be six feet under, another game pops out of the woodwork. Recent notable releases have included games like Deathsmiles and the XBLA game from Grasshopper Manufacture, Sine Mora. Next week will see the release of yet another shooter, from the highly regarded studio Cave. This title, a disc release for the Xbox 360, is an industrial age title set in Japan called Akai Katana.

Cave has had some troubles as of late, but that hasn’t stopped them from releasing high quality shoot ‘em ups. The company is hoping for another cult hit with Akai Katana, due out on the 15th. It might be considered a bad move to launch against the twin juggernauts of Diablo III and Max Payne 3, but that could very well be the opening this stealthy shooter needs to slip between the cracks into the hands of passionate arcade lovers.

The game will have DLC rolling out throughout May, but before fans begin to outcry about content being cut from the disc, it should be noted that this DLC harkens back to the launch days of the 360: it’s all picture packs and dashboard themes.

Akai Katana is the epitome of a small release, so preordering is a good idea if you’re interested in some good old bullet hell.

Cave fans should also be aware that a Windows Phone exclusive, Dodonpachi Maximum, was released in March.  Although I haven't gotten too far in it, I can tell you that it is everything you would expect and want from Cave.  Check it out if you are a Windows Phone weirdo like me.

I just imported Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition, I'm looking forward to it. Akai Katana also looks great and I'm hoping Rising Star continues to bring these games to the US.

I've seen some gameplay footage, and this looks remarkably insane.  I'm gonna have to keep my eye on it.
