Hackers Create Level Editor for New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The first one released the same day as the game.

Less than a full week after the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wii, a few ambitious people have managed to hack the game, creating a program that will allow gamers to create their own levels.

These level editors first appeared last Sunday, on the official launch date of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Currently there is only one available, with another in the works. The level editor available now is created by Vash, codenamed Tanooki. The other, created by Treeki is known as Reggie!, and is currently still in development.

Tanooki boasts the ability to "completely customize every aspect of every level" while the specifics of Reggie! are broken into more explicit details. According to the post, Reggie! will give players the following abilities: Object Editing, Sprite Editing, a Block Editor, and more to be announced at a later point.

While players will be able to download and use these level editors they can only be utilized on the PC through an emulator, not on the Wii itself.

Videos depicting both of the level editors can be seen below.

There are so many things wrong with the second video's recreation of World 1-1 from the original SMB that's it's unbelievable. :(

Relax, vudu. That video was produced one day after the game was leaked, more as a proof of concept. At that point, the game literally wouldn't work on the Wii. It was recorded using an emulator, hence the slow speed, and the person creating it didn't worry about fixing his mistakes, like the very first mushroom block.

All it did was show it could be done, and that they were working on it. The video above it was done with the released program, which just doesn't seem so good at this point, but is available. Still, it, too, is more or less proof it works, rather than an actual attempt at creating something enjoyable.

The people who made the editor used for the second video based the design off an editor created for the DS version... The difference is, the Wii version can easily be used!

After Reggie is released, I'm probably going to download it and create a few stages of my own, meant for multiplayer purposes, where some players will take a high path, and others will take a low one, and the paths will interact somehow, just to see how it works. Also, I'll be picking up remakes of classic Mario games for the multiplayer, too.

It's a good thing.

Oh!

The stages created can be used on the Wii, you just have to be able to patch or even replace a file in a Wii game you have backed up. The legality of backing up a game you own is something often debated, but I've never seen any legal precedent cited on the matter, though I haven't looked.

Regardless, it will be possible, and there's even potential to make the entire process of adding the new content created completely legally, if it's possible to load SD card data into the game, like what some have done with textures in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
