Fans of run-and-gun shooters with a friend to play co-operatively should definitely grab Matt Hazard BBB.
While many games this generation are a throwback to the days of yore, not many have emulated the cult classic, Contra (exluding Contra ReBirth). Matt Hazard, originally a campy third person shooter on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, has now returned for yet another campy adventure, this time, a run-and-gun shooter for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Along with the camp comes some solid gameplay that might emulate the old days a bit too closely.
Those familiar with the Contra series will remember shooting down droves of foes amidst rapid gunfire, all while traversing hazard plagued worlds full of peril. Matt Hazard does an excellent job of recreating this simple scenario that once made the Contra series so much fun. Along with the classic-inspired elements, Matt Hazard adds some modern enhancements such as being able to knife close enemies, a power-up meter and mode, grenades, and shooting towards the background, along with background-based gameplay in general.
The various new concepts only help bolster the solid core of classic run-and-gun shooting. Power-ups are plentiful, as are enemies, but masterful gameplay is awarded with a great sense of achievement. Of course, similar to the games it emulates, the challenge level is through the roof, and there's no Konami Code to save you. Thankfully, a second player goes a long way towards helping and makes for an even more enjoyable experience. For those flying solo, the unforgiving gameplay might be frustrating at times, especially when the levels are all twenty minutes or longer.
Though clearly inspired by Contra, Matt Hazard also draws inspiration from Duke Nukem. The main character has a wide-variety of quips, as well as constant fourth wall breaking comments that are almost always enjoyable to hear. The story dialog is just as over-the-top and will surely provide a few laughs as you play through the game with friends.
In addition to the great dialog and story, the game features a number of very unique locales complete with themed enemies and boss fight. Each level is drastically different which gives the game some nice variety.
Unfortunately, there's not much more to say about Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond. It's a solid run-and-gun shooter that hearkens back to the glory days of Contra. The challenge level is high, but the gameplay is fun and rewarding. Older players who cut their teeth on Contra will enjoy the game's core concepts and co-operative elements, and as such, should definitely check it out.
