Running from the Past

I was waiting to get a few newer gaming experiences under my belt before making a new blog post.

What I've been Playing:

Heaven's Vault came out a few months back, but I picked it up several weeks ago. Even though I'm terrible at languages, something about decoding them makes for a delicious gameplay loop. The game is scratching the same itch that Obra Dinn did when I played it last year. The gist is similar, you are trying to uncover a mystery. The gameplay loop is finding artifacts, decoding the language on them, and traveling to new places while expanding your timeline and building out your translation library. You are an archaeologist in a nebula, flying from planet to rock to planet, picking up objects from the past and piecing together the lost history of the nebula. There are also robots and conspiracy and religion and politics, all of which the protagonist takes with a huge chip on her shoulder. There is quite a bit of branching dialog and some decisions which certainly appear to change the way some events might play out. It's also surprisingly meaty and I fucking love it.

A Plague's Tale: Innocence is the other game I've been playing. The best comparison to an existing game I can make is The Last of Us. It's mostly a linear stealth game, set in the 1300's in France during an inquisition and a plague. I don't want to give away any of the plot, but it's certainly interesting and the cast is unusual in that they're mostly children and teens. The game was made with a small team, but it looks amazing and the voice acting is great. I'm enjoying it.

I've also been playing a TON of Guild Wars 2. The last update concluded the Living World Season 4 storyline and closed up a plot that's been running for five years. Also, rideable dragons now, which is an undertaking to unlock.

I'll post back next week with all of my E3 announcement whoops and hollers.

I've read about Heaven's Vault. I don't think it's my thing, but I think it's a great idea for a game. We are really living in a golden age for game design.

I might pick up A Plague's Tale eventually. Seems interesting... not a common setting for games.

Interesting games on the PS4 making me not want to trade it in as I have been thinking lately.
