Iwata on Asymmetrical Gaming

Kotaku posted a story recently covering a Q&A with Iwata in which he argued that the big special thing about the Wii U "gamepad" was asymmetric gameplay and that they simply failed to sell gamers on how cool that is.

Nintendo Wants To Re-Convince You The Wii U Gamepad Is Cool

The problem with local asymmetric gameplay is two-fold.  First, you can experience asymmetric gameplay with online gaming.  It's been going on for years in games like Halo-- it's called, you drive and I shoot.  Nintendo's second issue is the fact that Nintendo's version of asymmetric gameplay is really boring.  The big sell on this has been modes where one player has the bird's eye view with the tablet controller while the other players are wandering a maze.

The right way to do asymmetric gameplay is something like an online Star Wars game where player-one flies the Falcon while player-two fires the guns.  Again-- you drive and I shoot.

Iwata argued that Nintendo needs to adopt a new phrase to express what the "gamepad" is about.  He said, "As for the software going to be released from now on, we would like to describe the experience that the GamePad provides with a different expression in order to adequately convey its necessity to consumers and increase the number of consumers that think, “Indeed it is good to have a GamePad.”

The problem isn't the message in selling their asymmetric gameplay.  The problem is they have no primary use for this controller for mainstay games like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Bioshock, and GTA.  The problem is Nintendo is focusing on software like Mario Land 2, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, and Pikmin instead of 3D adventure games, shooters, and free roam worlds.

Nintendo cannot just change the message.  Nintendo has to change the types of games they are developing to titles like Metroid or their next Goldeneye (in terms of role).

yeah the problem is they aren't really building assymetrical games.  Assymetrical gameplay in Watch Dogs and the Division looks exciting, but on Nintendo it just looks lame.  It's unfortunate since the controller has so much potential.

Admittedly, I played only a handful of retail games on Wii U --NintendoLand, ZombiiU, NSMB: U and Scribblenauts -- but so far what I feel was the best experience I had with the gamepad is with the downloadable Nano Assault Neo.  It feels like 2-player LAN multi, but it's not, it's all available through one system and the gamepad.

Another feaure I like, which I discovered when playing NSMB: U, was propping the gamepad in its cradle to view, and then using a Wii remote to control.  Sadly, this variation disabled audio on the gamepad as this combination presumed I was using the TV, but I like the idea of using a seperate controller instead of the gamepad input, and using the gamepad solely for viewing.  I thought about writing to NIntendo about this.  Maybe I will.

I feel like there's quite a bit of potential in asymmetrical gaming, I just think it's a really hard message to properly convey, especially without an anchor game that demonstrates it well. I actually think that the much bigger and better selling point of the GamePad is the Off-TV Play. Having played a few games on the GamePad, I can confidently say that I would buy the Wii U version of any game over a competing choice just for Off-TV Play.

When Chessa wants to watch a show on TV, I don't have to stop playing whatever I'm enjoying to share the screen. I hit the menu, flip over to Off-TV Play and continue on my merry way. I can even sit with her and play my game while she watches her show. It's a brilliant feature that carries so much strength, I can't believe they aren't doing a better job of showcasing how convenient it is for anyone who has to share their TV with a spouse/child/roommate/etc (aka, just about everyone).

If they could put the kind of content they have for iPad on that thing, I'd be all over it. It would be a cheaper way to play iPad-like games and have a whole Wii-plus system as well. Why aren't they doing games for it like that?!

I think there is great potential for entire games built around how the Zelda archery game in Nintendo Land controlled.  That's an easy image to sell; like swinging a baseball bat with the Wii remote.  You show the player standing and engaged in the game, and you show how the perspective on the screen shifts 1:1 with the player's movements.
